Alright. For now, the meeting was over.
I’d ended up delivering a whole speech, but… honestly, it was scary that no matter what I said, they’d affirm it.
Even if my steering was wrong, they’d just keep charging ahead, right?
Ideally, I’d like to bring in an outsider as an adviser… but that seemed like it would bring its own set of problems.
Well, that could wait. For now, I’d go to the training hall once and confirm Fels’s… no, my capabilities.
Back in the game, if you put it nicely, I was an all-rounder… if you put it poorly, I was a jack-of-all-trades—the usual protagonist statline. Though with the Overlord title, I think I leaned a bit more offensive.
For magic, it should’ve been fire, lightning, darkness, and illusion… I think. Magic was mostly support, with weapon combat as the main focus, but… honestly, I really wanted to try magic.
In the training hall, I could fire away as much as I liked. Might as well enjoy myself.
“Lynferia. Will you spar with me? There are a lot of things I want to do.”
“…Eh!? Y-yes!”
For some reason, Lynferia’s eyes went wide and her voice cracked as she replied.
“…W-what time should I come by!?”
“Hm? No, right now. We’re going together.”
“R-right now!? Together!?”
Lynferia snapped her gaze out the window at incredible speed.
Wondering if something was outside, I looked too… but nothing seemed to be flying around.
“Oh my… is it only Lynferia~?”
While I was looking outside, Kamila spoke as she stepped up beside Lynferia.
“Hm? That wasn’t what I meant, but…”
Well… Lynferia alone would probably be enough, but it might be better to have Kamila—the magic expert—tag along too.
To begin with, I didn’t even know how you were supposed to cast magic…
“Yeah. Kamila, will you come too? It’s my first time, so I’d like you to teach me a few things.”
“Fweh?! …Ah, no, yes—of course, I’ll go~”
Kamila’s eyes popped open for a moment, but then she answered with a slightly smug look.
“Then let’s go. No matter how much time we have, it won’t be enough.”
“I-is it that intense!?”
“…Is surpassing the Fels within us… what that means, I wonder?”
Lynferia panicked, and Kamila muttered something under her breath.
I looked away from them and glanced back into the conference room.
For some reason, everyone was staring at me with huge, round eyes… the atmosphere was weird. What was going on?
“Is something wrong?”
“N-no. There is no problem. Kiriku, Ilmitt—let us begin our briefing.”
Arandor shook his head hard, then called out to Kiriku and the others.
I probably should leave quickly instead of getting in the way.
“Y-yes… why am I a man…?”
“…Ugh…”
The two of them started a briefing with Arandor, looking oddly dejected… were they going to be okay?
“If there’s a problem, call me anytime.”
“N-no! We would never dare disturb you!”
Arandor shook his head violently again. He looked like a dignified old general, yet he was suddenly acting like he had no composure. Had I given him some strange setting?
“R-right. Well, don’t hesitate. Lynferia, guide me.”
“Y-yes! Um… the bathing is…”
Bathing—so there was a bath. Good. As expected of a domestic title. But I’d take it after training.
“That’s after. If I go now, I’ll just get dirty again.”
“Dirty…”
The two women murmured in unison with solemn faces. Had I said something weird?
“T-then, Fels-sama, this way.”
“Yeah. I’m counting on you.”
“Ha! I will serve with all my strength!”
Guided by a strangely fired-up Lynferia, I headed for the training hall.
At that moment, I didn’t notice the conference room behind me suddenly erupting into commotion.
“My sincerest apologies!”
The moment we arrived at the training hall, Lynferia performed the most beautiful full prostration I had ever seen and raised her voice in apology.
“N-no, don’t worry about it. My wording was bad. My head was full of training, you know?”
“Ha! Hahaa!”
Hahaa? Was I some feudal lord? Ah—right. I was the Overlord.
“Raise your head, Lynferia. And Kamila, you too—come over here.”
I also called out to Kamila, who was crouched by the wall with her face in her hands.
Why the two of them were like this… didn’t really need explaining.
Because of a small misunderstanding, I’d embarrassed the two women—not just to the point of ears turning red, but their entire bodies.
Wait—was that why the air felt weird when we left the conference room? Did everyone think the same thing?
If I didn’t clear this up, wouldn’t it be bad? I’d end up being called a lecherous overlord instead of an overlord.
But… how…?
Hm. Maybe… could this work?
“Ururu… are you here?”
“…Yes… I’m here.”
She really was here! I figured she was ninja-like enough that if I called, she’d appear, but… seriously? The foreign minister was incredible.
Anyway, I had to get this out fast.
“To Arandor… no, to everyone who was in the conference room earlier—tell them we’re in the training hall to train—no, wait.”
I should avoid phrasing that could cause misunderstandings. If it sounded like I was ordering everyone not to come because we were doing something indecent in the training hall, that would be bad.
“Tell them: we are training in the training hall, so anyone with business—or anyone who wants to train with us—may come.”
“…Understood… can I… join too?”
“Yeah, of course. Deliver the message, then come back.”
“…I’ll be back… soon.”
Ururu’s mouth relaxed into the faintest smile, then she vanished from in front of me.
I reached out to grab the spot where she’d been, but there was nothing there… seriously, how did she do that?
Still, that should clear up the misunderstanding. Now I just had to get these two back to normal…
I’d realized something was off while we were on the way.
In my head, the training hall felt like it would be on the first floor. The background art was bare dirt, too… so when Lynferia started heading upward, I asked her.
What floor was the training hall on?
Lynferia answered: the first floor.
So I asked again.
If it’s on the first floor, why are we going up the stairs?
And for some reason, the two of them made faces like they’d steeled themselves for something, guided me to the training hall… and only after arriving did we learn just how wildly our interpretations differed—leading to the current situation.
…Look, okay!? Kamila’s side might require a little confirmation later, but… both of them were unbelievably beautiful, alright!? Overlord Fels can’t say he has zero impure thoughts! If you asked whether I had any interest in “nighttime overlord play,” the answer would be no—absolutely no!
But hear me out! Even if I’m Overlord Fels, inside I’m still just a shy gamer! And Lynferia and the others are superhumanly gorgeous—like “a once-in-a-millennium idol would run barefoot in defeat” gorgeous!
In other words, I’m an Overlord at level 1 holding a wooden stick. Challenging a nuclear aircraft carrier loaded with jets. The hurdle is so high you could crawl under it.
Besides, it’s day one of this incomprehensible situation, right? There’s no way I could do something like that immediately, right? It’s not like I’m chickening out, okay? I’m the Overlord! When it’s time, I can do it! I can!
So, Lynferia, Kamila—let’s train, okay?
“Lynferia, Kamila. I know I’m asking something harsh, but hear me out. I said earlier my memory is unreliable… and that means I’m also uncertain in combat. What can I do, can my body move, can I use magic… I came here to find out. I need your cooperation for that. Lend me your strength.”
“Y-yes! I’m sorry! Kamila!”
“…Fine, then. So what do you want me to do~?”
Kamila stood up from where she’d been curled up in the corner and approached.
“Right… then.”
Magic. First, magic. Obviously magic. I wanted magic. I wanted it so badly it was hardly worth thinking about. But asking how to use magic…
No. Don’t flinch. I could force it through with “my memory’s unreliable,” right?
“…C-can you teach me how to use magic?”
Damn. Stuttering wasn’t very overlord-like.
“…Sure. Do you understand the basic spell categories~?”
“Yeah. Arrow, Wall, Storm, Area, and then the element-exclusive one, right?”
Legions had ten elements: fire, water, earth, wind, lightning, ice, light, darkness, holy, and illusion.
Each element had five kinds of magic. For fire, for example: the single-target Flame Arrow; the defensive Flame Wall that created a wall of fire in front of you; the wide-area Flame Storm; the war-segment-only anti-army Flame Area; and the element-exclusive spell you could use after maxing the fire magic rank—White Flame.
The exceptions were holy, which was healing magic, and illusion, which was buff/debuff magic. Those two elements also had various additional spells with different effects beyond the five categories.
“If you know that, you’re fine~. Combine it with the elements you can use, and either say it out loud or think it, and it’ll activate as long as you have mana left~. As for charging mana, are you okay on that~?”
“I know you need to spend mana stones in advance to charge mana.”
“And in this case, since we’re using magic in the training hall, we don’t need to worry about mana…”
The game probably didn’t want you consuming mana stones just to test characters in the training hall. It was a game where you edited your characters, so checking how they felt to use in the training hall was essential.
Thinking that, I reached out toward the target that had been set up and willed: Flame Arrow.
The next instant, a flaming arrow launched at terrifying speed and struck the target.
Whoa… I actually cast magic… this is insane—this is fun. Super fun. Can I still raise stats now? Should I make myself able to use all ten elements…?
No, no, no—wait. If I did that, even a hundred million would evaporate in seconds. Until I found a way to obtain mana stones, I needed to restrain myself.
“Perfect~. Was Fels-sama a four-element user~? Impressive~.”
Kamila spoke with a satisfied smile while I wrestled with myself.
“Hearing that from someone who can use ten elements doesn’t mean much… but illusion will need practice, since it’s so flexible.”
“True~. Illusion is my favorite~.”
I looked away from Kamila’s seductive smile and turned to Lynferia.
“Next is the real thing. My main is the sword.”
I spoke with a blank expression so I wouldn’t give away how excited I was.
“Oh? Don’t talk about magic like it’s just a side dish~. I don’t like that~.”
“Sorry, Kamila. But I’m more physical-leaning.”
After apologizing to Kamila, who was pouting, I accepted the wooden sword Lynferia had brought.
“Lynferia. Do skills activate the same way as magic?”
“Yes. For Fels-sama, it would be sword techniques.”
Lynferia said with a smile.
Skills were weapon-specific techniques, and like magic, they came in five types: single-target attack, area attack, defense, ranged attack, and a weapon-type exclusive technique.
The weapon types were sword, spear, axe, and bow—though for bows, the “ranged” slot was replaced by a close-range technique.
Also, skills consumed stamina instead of mana, so if you overused them, you died. Though in the training hall, you could apparently spam them freely too.
I swung the sword while willing the sword’s single-target technique: Slash.
…Unlike magic, it was hard to tell whether it activated.
But the strike felt sharper than I’d intended… I think.
“Looks like there’s no problem activating skills. What will you do next?”
Oh, it did activate? Got it.
“Then the real test starts now. First, Lynferia—I want a one-on-one spar. For warm-up too… teach me as you go.”
If she went all-out, I’d probably die…
“Understood… then, here I come!”
Now… this was the watershed.
Could I really move?
Or was I still the same gamer as before?
The answer… would be obvious soon.
