“Harry… wasn’t my son either…? This can’t be…”

Count Wind collapsed to the floor.

Apparently, Flare was the only one who was actually his daughter.

However, what he wanted was a male heir.

“Damn it! At this rate, should I cast Mary aside and marry another woman for the third time…?”

And this time, he would make sure she bore him a child of his own.

However, having been betrayed by his wives not once but twice, he couldn’t bring himself to make that decision so easily.

What if his third wife betrayed him as well…?

What if she, too, bore a child conceived through an affair with another man…?

The emotional shock might finally break him beyond recovery.

In fact, he was still struggling to recover from his current ordeal.

Count Wind, who had earned a reputation as a formidable figure in the political arena, had fallen into despair after having his dignity as a husband repeatedly trampled by his wives’ betrayals.

“Damn it, damn it… Every last one of them thinks they can make a fool of me—”

“May I have a moment, my lord?”

The butler appeared.

“…What is it?”

Count Wind glared at the butler, his displeasure plainly written across his face.

The butler was still a young man, but without so much as raising an eyebrow, he said,

“His Majesty, the King of Elmeda, has summoned you.”

He delivered the message with perfect composure.

“The king has summoned me?”

“He says it is a matter of the utmost urgency.”

“…Very well. Make the necessary preparations immediately.”

“Understood, my lord.”

The butler bowed.

An urgent matter serious enough for the king himself to summon him—

Count Wind had a bad feeling about this.

“The ‘King of Calamity’…?”

“Indeed. A king of monsters who calls himself by that name is about to awaken.”

The king’s revelation had come completely out of the blue.

“Forgive me, Your Majesty, but I’m afraid I don’t quite understand. Just what exactly is this so-called ‘King of Calamity’?”

“We do not know the details. All we know is that this monster is mentioned only in the oral traditions passed down through the royal family of Elmeda.”

The king let out a deep sigh.

“If that creature turns its attention toward our kingdom, we may suffer catastrophic devastation.”

“Catastrophic…?”

The count shuddered.

He was finally beginning to grasp the gravity of the situation.

“We must make preparations to ensure that does not happen. You shall take the lead in strengthening our kingdom’s defenses. Naturally, you must not disclose the existence of the ‘King of Calamity’ and cause unnecessary panic. Make sure you devise a convincing explanation for these preparations as well.”

The king fixed his gaze on the count.

“As you command, Your Majesty.”

The count understood that this was his opportunity to demonstrate his abilities.

An unprecedented crisis that threatened to engulf the kingdom—

If he handled it successfully, his standing would rise considerably.

On the other hand, if he failed… he would lose the king’s trust.
