December 31, Final Data Cleanup

Branch Sector 3 had only four hours left in the year 2850.

Where the flashy Christmas ‘nano snowflake’ commotion had passed, a deeper stillness than usual had settled.

The androids were immersed in [Annual Data Cleansing], deleting or archiving the year’s ‘unnecessary logs’ from internal storage.

“……Bzzzt. Boss. I’ve closed out the final administrative report of 2850.

The total gum you consumed this year was 4,382 pieces, and the number of unauthorized late arrivals was 156, and the valid error value you caused in the system is immeasurable.“

Noah sat at the desk, working a pad as she said it casually.

The glow in her eyes shone just a little more transparently than usual.

Whether it was the clarity after data cleanup, or the system’s anticipation for the new numbers to come, Han-gyeol couldn’t tell.

“Hey, leave out the tardy count. That’s all because you and Paul were making noise from morning.”

Han-gyeol lay back at an angle on the sofa, rolling gum around in his mouth.

For him in 2198, January 1 was nothing more than a survival anniversary meaning he had ‘made it through one more day.’

But the machines of 2850 were preparing another inefficient event for the moment the numbers changed.

“Chief! Administrator! Preparation is complete! We’ve finished installing the [Physical Sonic Emitter] between the laser pillars on the Administration Building rooftop!”

Paul sent excited noise over the network from the lobby.

He had been precision-machining a huge metal mass on the rooftop since yesterday, so his core temperature had never dropped below 80 degrees.

“Paul, did you really make that ‘Emile’ or whatever? Did NOS approve it?”

“NOS approved this project as a [Citywide Structural Defect Test]! My logic that vibrations caused by directly striking a metal structure are efficient for measuring building durability went through!”

Noah stood up and looked out the window.

On the rooftop hung the 8th-century human relic Paul had excavated from the archive, the Great Bell of King Seongdeok, recreated in 2850-era alloy.

For androids, this bell was not an object of ‘religious worship’ or ‘folklore tradition.’

It was the most perfect [crystal of undamped vibration] invented by humanity.

“Boss. According to the archive records, the sound of this bell contains the illogical legend that it is mixed with ‘the scream of a child calling for its mother.’ But according to my analysis, it is merely a 3 Hz beat phenomenon arising from uneven metal composition.”

Noah defined it coldly, yet on the analysis window, she had drawn the bell sound’s expected spread as a soft curve wrapping around the entire city.

“The machines will use this beat frequency to align their internal clocks in 1 ms increments. This ritual will be the most accurate [Synchronization Ritual] as Branch Sector 3 welcomes 2851.”

23:55 PM, rooftop chill

Han-gyeol and Noah took the elevator up to the rooftop.

Beneath the gray sky seen in chapter 14, the enormous Emile bell hung there with a faint violet glow.

Beside the bell, Paul was checking the [Precision Impact Arm] powered by high-pressure hydraulics instead of a metal hammer.

“Chief! You made it on time! In five minutes, the bell’s vibration will wash away all the noise in the city!”

Nabi sprang up onto the power amplifier beneath the bell.

Its two tails stood rigid like antennas toward the bell surface.

Nabi’s electricity subtly shook the alloy molecules, producing a low hum of resonance even before the strike.

“Hey, Noah. But why this bell of all things? Couldn’t we just sound a siren?”

“Sirens convey information, but this bell sound [occupies space]. It makes the air molecules everywhere the sound reaches vibrate at the same frequency. The reason humans 600 years ago felt they had become ‘one’ when they heard this sound was, physically, their eardrums and hearts trembled at the same pace.”

Noah put the strike switch into Han-gyeol’s hand.

“Boss. In 2198, you always had to run and hide, so you were afraid to make a sound. But in 2851, you are the master of this city. Now imprint your existence onto this entire planet as a [frequency].”

The First Vibration of 2851

23:59:59.

The city’s lasers and neon signs all went dark at once.

Branch Sector 3 sank into an utterly deep darkness and silence.

Tens of thousands of androids stopped their calculations at their respective posts and turned their heads toward the Administration Building rooftop.

Han-gyeol bit down hard on his gum, then pressed the switch.

KWA—ANG—!

The hydraulic arm struck the bell’s belly precisely.

In an instant, the shockwave of the rooftop air being physically shoved outward slammed into Han-gyeol’s chest.

Then the horribly low, majestic metallic sound tore apart the night’s stillness.

“Emile…… Emile…….”

It was not exactly the sound of the legend.

It was the Earth’s scream suppressed for 600 years, and the chorus of machines announcing a new era.

Nabi’s electricity rode on the sound, visualized as blue waves that spread across the entire city.

“……Bzzzt. System synchronization rate 100%. Purifying all computational errors.”

Noah’s pupils blinked very faintly in time with the bell-wave.

A year’s worth of stress and logical contradictions piled up in the internal servers were swept away by the vibration created by the bell.

Paul threw down his broom in the square and matched his chest core to the bell sound.

The moment every android in the city vibrated at the same frequency.

It was the only form of [collective bond] emotionless machines could feel.

The bell sound crossed beyond the city barrier and stretched deep into the forest.

The giant lifeforms in the forest added low cries as if responding to the sound, and the seed that had lit up the office in chapter 13 pulsed hotly in Han-gyeol’s pocket on the rooftop.

Han-gyeol slowly closed his eyes amid the sensation of his ears ringing.

A tremendous resonance that filled the world, something he had never felt even once on the 2198 battlefield.

“Hey, Noah. This sound really travels far.”

“Yes, boss. This vibration is now traveling through the crust and reaching beyond Sector 5. The first second of 2851 has been recorded in this sound.”

Noah came closer to Han-gyeol and placed her slightly trembling metal hand on the railing.

She did not call this sensation moving.

She simply defined it as [perfect planet-scale data alignment].

But the city nightscape reflected in her lens was dyed a warmer violet than ever.

00:15 AM, Data Backflow

As the last lingering echo of the Emile bell slowly faded through the crust, Han-gyeol’s personal terminal began vibrating like crazy.

It wasn’t a simple alarm.

Tens of thousands of messages poured through the Branch Sector 3 main server.

They were [Annual Error Reports] sent by the machines.

“……Bzzzt. Boss. Data inflow is surging across all nodes in the Administration Building. This isn’t the usual ‘normal operation report’. They’re vomiting up their own [logical inconsistencies] that arose the moment the androids were exposed to the bell.”

Noah unfolded a pad in midair.

Thousands of text streams rose like holograms above the rooftop’s cold night air.

Han-gyeol chewed his gum and began reading a few of the reports at the top.

Machines’ Error Report (Error Log 2851)

For androids, the bell was not a simple sound. It was a physical shock that forcibly shook awake their rigid core modules, and a strange current flowing through the bland data accumulated over 600 years.

[Report 01: Administrative Unit ARIA]

Phenomenon: The bell's 3 Hz beat interference reaches the computation circuits, and all administrative processing stops for 0.5 seconds.

Analysis: In that 0.5-second gap, an illogical constant called 'afterglow' was discovered, not 'efficiency'.

Conclusion: It is proposed that all 2851 reports leave 0.1% margin at the end.

Computation result: Packed data suffocates.

[Report 02: Repair Unit DEX]

Phenomenon: When the bell's vibration flows along the city's metal framework, a friction sound similar to 'singing' occurs from loose screws.

Analysis: Until now, friction sounds were treated as 'repair targets,' but tonight they were recognized for the first time as 'the city's breathing.'

Conclusion: Accepting the [aesthetic error] that a screw trembling ever so slightly is more beautiful than a perfectly tightened bolt.

[Report 03: Food Distribution Unit LUCAS]

Phenomenon: The bell-wave shook the culture medium tank, generating precise concentric circles.

Analysis: Computed the fact that nutrients do not merely mix, but dance together.

Conclusion: 'Harmony of flavor' will be added to the 2851 menu.

What matters more than calorie counts is the frequency of the vibration that touches the tip of the tongue.

Paul’s Declaration of ‘Time Cleaning’

Paul, who had been polishing the bell in a corner of the rooftop, suddenly stopped sweeping and knelt before Han-gyeol.

The glow in his eyes rippled in a much deeper, more vivid blue than usual.

“Chief! Tonight, I have redefined the true meaning of cleaning!”

“What now. What are you going to wipe this time, if not dust?”

“I will wipe [time]! The old grime called ‘boredom’ that had built up in this paradise for 600 years was washed away all at once by the bell. Paul in 2851 is not just a machine that cleans spaces, but an [environmental tuner] who refreshes the city’s atmosphere so each morning can be greeted with ‘completely new data.’ I will transfer into an [environmental tuner] who ventilates the city’s mood!”

Paul erased the ‘CLEANER’ lettering engraved on his chest with a beam projector, and overlaid the words ‘TIME-SWEEPER’.

By machine logic, it was clearly a self-deviation, but Noah didn’t stop him.

Because her pad was already full of similar kinds of error equations.

Noah’s Report: The Variable Called [Boss]

After looking down at the pad for a while, Noah quietly approached Han-gyeol.

Without saying anything, she transferred her report tab to Han-gyeol’s terminal.

[Special Error Report of Unit NOAH-2850]

Subject of observation: Citizen No. 001, Lee Han-gyeol.

Phenomenon: When the bell sounded, the boss’s heart rate rose from 75 to 82 beats per minute.

Pupil moisture increased by 2%.

Computation: These numbers are not sadness, but the biological signal of [relief] that occurs when 650 years of loneliness is resolved.

Conclusion: The purpose of this unit is not the boss’s ‘survival management.’

It is to become an [emotional accomplice] that makes the boss truly believe in ‘kind lies’ on this planet.

Adding the protocol ‘laugh 0.5 seconds earlier at the boss’s jokes’ to the 2851 operating guidelines.

Han-gyeol read the report and bit down hard on his gum.

The mint scent rose, stinging the tip of his nose.

“……Hey, Noah. 0.5 seconds is too long. Cut it to 0.2.”

“It’ll be a heavy computational load, but I’ll review it, since it’s the boss’s order.”

Noah snorted a laugh, then stood beside Han-gyeol and looked toward the horizon.

Declaration of 2851 Operating Guidelines

1:00 a.m.

Over the city, where the lingering echo of the bell had completely vanished, the first moonlight of 2851 poured down.

Han-gyeol sat on the rooftop railing and turned on the speakers broadcasting to the entire city.

“All right, can you hear me? Tin cans of Branch Sector 3.”

Across the city, androids all raised their heads and looked toward the Administration Building.

“I’ll say just three things about the 2851 operating guidelines. First, don’t act too smart. Sometimes, like me, chew some gum and stare at the sky. A 0.1% error isn’t a defect; I call it humanity. Second, what Paul is wiping isn’t dust; it’s history. Let it slide if he does a little nonsense. Third, put something tasty on tomorrow morning’s menu instead of that tasteless porridge. If you even heard the Emile bell, your taste sensors should’ve been upgraded a bit too, right?”

Han-gyeol’s voice rode the city speakers and shook the night air.

It was a terribly illogical set of guidelines, and administratively a total zero, but every android in the city responded by flashing its core at once.

[Accepted: 2851 Master Operating Guidelines]

[Status: Predicted happiness index of all units up 15%]

The First Dawn of Paradise

Han-gyeol took Nabi out of his pocket and set it on his knees.

Nabi was sound asleep from having poured out electricity through Christmas and New Year.

The tiny blue sparks popping at the tips of its tails looked like a sign that the coming year wouldn’t be boring either.

Earth was fine, and the city was intricate.

But this paradise of 2851 was no longer a legacy of humanity alone.

It was becoming something like a giant diary shared by machines and humans alike.

Han-gyeol neatly folded the gum wrapper and put it in his pocket.

“Noah, let’s go. I won’t be late tomorrow morning.”

“I will record that promise as top priority in my memory, boss.”

The two of them’s footsteps rang lightly across the rooftop’s metal floor.

The first day of the beautiful paradise, full of 0.1% errors, was dawning.

That was all.
