When I started climbing while searching for something that looked like a meal, I found that there was a surprising amount of life out here.

There were birds clad in iron armor, and even the Lizardmen (Lizard-headed humans) unique to mining areas; there were quite a few creatures. However, the only one that looked even remotely delicious was the bird in the iron armor.

“Nothing looks very tasty.”

“You’re right.”

Despite saying that, I was currently roasting one of the birds.

Since we couldn’t find many appetizing options, we had climbed halfway up the mountain and were now preparing a late lunch.

“I guess when the location changes, the things you can and can’t eat change quite a bit, too.”

“True. I didn’t think it would take this long just to find prey.”

Seriously. To think we searched that much and only found one species that looked good to eat.

“Now then, is it done roasting yet?”

Just as I was about to cut a piece to check if it was cooked through—

“Peep! Peep!”

“Hmm? Whoa!”

That was close! I thought I was going to step on it. This little guy.

It was some kind of… hatchling? This yellow thing wrapped in fluffy down feathers looked like a chick, but its size was one circular notch larger than the chicks I knew.

“Peep!”

Watching the little guy jump while fluttering its wings was incredibly cute, but hey, don’t jump so close to the fire. It’s dangerous.

“What’s up with you? Are you hungry?”

“Peep!”

“Ril, is it okay if I give this guy a little food?”

“I don’t mind, but… are you going to make that one a Familiar too?”

“That’s a bit further down the road, maybe? If it wants to stay with me when the time comes, I’ll make it a Familiar. If it wants to live in the wild, I’ll let it go then.”

“I have a feeling it’s probably going to follow you.”

She looked somewhat dissatisfied, but does she not realize I have no intention of letting her go?

“Anyway, can this guy even eat meat?”

It was flapping about while staring at the meat, but was it really okay?

“Why don’t you just try giving it some for now?”

Fair point. I brought a piece of meat held in my hand closer, and the hatchling began to peck at it and eat.

“It actually ate it.”

“Then we can relax. Let’s eat, too.”

Perhaps because its body was so small, its stomach seemed to get full after only a tiny amount. It started to doze off, so I tucked it into my shirt to make sure it wouldn’t wander off before I started on my own meal.
