“Thank you so much!”
I was so happy that a smile naturally spread across my face.
“Kelly used to be Princess Mia’s wardrobe assistant, so she has a very refined sense of style. Besides, I couldn’t tell yesterday because of the makeup, but I suspect your natural features were wonderful to begin with.”
He was killing me with kindness! Was Lord Nazelbert actually an angel?
“You’re far too kind. More importantly, what was that about Kelly being the Princess’s wardrobe assistant?”
“Ah, her outstanding taste was highly valued. Despite being a maid, she was entrusted with some of the arrangements for the Princess’s attire.”
Why was someone that talented spending their time dressing someone like me?! It was almost intimidating.
My frantic confusion was cleared up by Lord Nazelbert’s next words.
“Princess Mia threw a tantrum, and Kelly ended up getting fired…”
When you’re a royal wardrobe assistant, you have to prepare exemplary outfits that follow formal protocols even more strictly than for regular nobles. Apparently, Kelly and the others kept that in mind, suggesting outfits appropriate for the time and place.
However, Princess Mia had found fault with their work.
From what I heard, she had made some rather unreasonable demands, like “Make the ceremonial dress flashier!” or “I want to wear a sexy dress with a plunging neckline and an open back!”
“That would surely be unacceptable.”
“Exactly. But the angry Princess took out her frustrations on the wardrobe staff, and Kelly, who held the lowest rank, was forced to take the responsibility and resign. I happened to witness the scene by chance, so I decided to hire her.”
“I see.”
Lord Nazelbert really was a kind person. And I was glad that the talented Kelly hadn’t been left out on the streets.
It seemed the Princess frequently went on rampages and fired her servants. She was apparently much more selfish than I had imagined.
“By the way, I expect word from the Royal Palace regarding yesterday’s incident sometime soon… Depending on the decision, you might suffer some disadvantages. I am truly sorry for dragging you into this. I intend to make arrangements to ensure you aren’t troubled as much as possible.”
“Oh, please don’t apologize.”
“But…!”
“Well then, if things do go poorly for me, could I perhaps keep these clothes and shoes? To tell the truth, I didn’t actually own any of my own clothes. They were always hand-me-downs from my grandmother or great-grandmother. That’s all I need; I’ll manage the rest on my own.”
“No, I can’t possibly let it end at that…!”
“Is it too greedy of me to beg for clothes after all? I’m sorry, I got ahead of myself.”
“That’s not what I meant…”
For some reason, Nazelbert let out a long sigh.
Was asking for the clothes and shoes being too greedy after all? Even if they were ready-made, they were items provided by a Duke’s household, so they might be quite expensive.
“At any rate, I will negotiate with the other side to ensure you can lead a peaceful life. I’ve also contacted the House of Eventail to tell them to take you back.”
“Thank you very much.”
I didn’t think my stubborn family would ever retract something once they’d said it, though.
For now, I simply gave a quiet nod.
