In the Adventurers’ Guild before evening.
Just as adventurers who had gone out nearby were returning and beginning to convert their results into money, the receptionist noticed that.
For a moment, she thought he might be on the verge of death, given how battered he looked.
He staggered slightly, yet his steps were steady.
Realizing that this was Kikori—the one she had sent off that morning—the receptionist was surprised, but a faint smile formed on her face.
When Kikori walked up to her and placed it on the counter, her smile grew even wider.
“Three magic stones. So you defeated goblins.”
“They were strong. It wouldn’t have been strange if I’d been killed.”
“That’s what a fight to the death is like.”
Even so, the receptionist added,
“Normally, beginners proudly bring back magic stones after defeating just one goblin. But three?”
“That’s… my current limit.”
“Hehe. I praised the number, and yet you’re ashamed of how few they are. I like that about you.”
In truth, three goblin magic stones amounted to very little in terms of earnings.
If a veteran had brought them in, they would likely have been told, “Why are you bragging about such a small haul?”
But Kikori had almost no proper equipment, and on his very first attempt he brought back three. That carried great significance.
“Then, the purchase price for these magic stones is three thousand yen.”
“Three thousand…”
“Does that feel like too little? Even so, this is a fair purchase price.”
“No. Thank you very much.”
Three thousand yen. At one thousand yen per night at the cheapest inn, that meant he could stay three nights—but Kikori still lacked far too many things.
Far too many… and yet he did not have nearly enough money to acquire them.
“Um…”
“Yes? What is it?”
“To get the things I need, which shops should I go to?”
“Well, let’s see.”
At Kikori’s question, the receptionist looked thoughtful for a moment, then pointed at the floor.
“This building also has a basement. We sell consignment goods there. They’re a bit more expensive because of the brokerage fee, but they come with quality assurance from the Adventurers’ Guild.”
“I see…”
Kikori understood that if something went wrong, the Adventurers’ Guild would take responsibility.
The higher prices were unfortunate, but it might be a good way to get a sense of standard costs.
“The shops themselves are in the city, so you could also go directly to any store you like and buy from them.”
Of course, there’s no guild guarantee there, she added.
Indeed, which option was better would depend on personal judgment.
Right now, Kikori did not feel capable of making that kind of judgment.
“Thank you very much. I’ll go take a look at the basement.”
“Yes, have a good look.”
Bowing to the receptionist as she waved lightly, Kikori descended the stairs leading to the basement.
