Kwoaaaaaaah…!!!
A wave was surging in from the distance. It looked as if a gigantic wall was drawing near.It was a tidal wave. And on top of that, the Big Wave, big enough to swallow a country that appears no bigger than a fingernail on the map, like the Korean Peninsula in one go, was rolling this way, slowly, yet somehow fast.
Had an enraged sea god driven down its trident or something? The person standing before it was so powerless that he could do nothing but watch the wave roll in.
“Fuck.”
…He didn’t just watch.
“Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuuuuuuck!”
The person standing before the oncoming tidal wave spewed curses as he stared at the Big Wave. The white-haired young man, soaked to the skin in the rain, slammed his fist into the ground as if something was unbearably unfair, letting the sheets of rain hit him full on.
“Aaaaaaagh! You bastaaaards!!”
Thud! Thump!
His fist, pounding into the muddy ground, was getting dirtier and dirtier with rain and muddy water, and because he kept slamming down, red drops of blood began to show.Mud should have gotten in and stung, but the young man kept pounding his fist as if he didn’t feel any pain.
“You bastaaards! I trusted you! I still trusted you even after you pulled that shit!!!”
What was so unfair? What was so bitterly unjust? The man continued to hurt himself as he howled.Even with his own power, he could not stop that tidal wave.Because that tidal wave was not something natural, it was being drawn in by the power of a transcendent being. The one who had called forth the Big Wave was someone intent on destroying this land.
“I clearly told you! I told you we couldn’t put it off! I told you we had to stop it!!”
Not a single person in the leadership listened to his words. And the ones he had somehow managed to lead all ran away without even looking back when faced with an inevitable calamity. And now, as the calamity approached, the only one left in this place was this man.
“How can there not be a single person left!”
There had clearly been chances to stop the approaching calamity. There had been several, dozens, even hundreds. But every time, they let them slip away. There was not a single person who listened to him.
“I told you I can’t stop it by myself. I’m a supporter, you bastards…”
Supporter. It was a term that referred to someone who provided support or assistance from the rear.
“On top of that, I’m a healer…”
The man was a healer.Among supporters, it was a job specialized in treating injuries and providing support. That was also why he had missed those chances again and again.
A healer could not do anything alone.
Even as this was happening, the wall of water was drawing steadily closer.
Kwoaaaaaaah!
An island that could be seen nearby was swallowed by the Big Wave.
Rumble!
No, it was shattered. That was not a simple wave but a tremendous power that would devour and smash everything. If something collided with that, even solid ground would be ground up like tofu. The human body was no exception. The man’s body was swallowed by a shadow as if it had sunk into water.
Thud! Crack!
A milky-white hemisphere spread out ten or so meters around the man, but before the wave, it shattered to pieces like glass. When even his last resort vanished in vain, the white-haired man looked up at the Big Wave that had come right in front of him.Was this the end now…?In the eyes of the white-haired man looking up at the Big Wave, even the faint light of hope went out, leaving them darkened.
“If only I at least had an attack skill, or no, a weapon that could convert holy power into an attack, no, that’s not it either.”
He needed a more fundamental method.Attack skills and weapons that could convert holy power into attack power were important, but he needed something more fundamental than that.
“If only I could go back…”
A single phrase slipped unconsciously out of the white-haired man’s mouth.Right. What I need isn’t a skill or an item, it’s
Kwoaaaaaaaah!
The Big Wave crashed onto the land.Nature in its fury swallowed the man whole. The man swept away by nature was so tiny that soon not even a single strand of his hair could be seen.
And at that moment.
Flaaash!
From within the pitch-black wave, a gentle light that seemed to embrace everything burst out.The gentle light devoured the wave and steadily grew in size. The wave heaved greatly as if resisting the light, but it couldn’t overcome the continuously growing light and lost its momentum.
To the one who had lost consciousness, a transcendent will that protected the world delivered a message.
Perhaps because that transcendent will had reached him, the dying white-haired man briefly regained consciousness.
‘It hurts. Where am I?’
However, before he could fully come to his senses, a line of text blocked his vision.
‘What the,’
As the world warped, the white-haired man brought his trembling hand to his mouth.Urgh, he felt like throwing up.
It was like he had been put into a huge washing machine. The man rolled and rolled until he no longer knew where up and down were, then he was flung out into the world as if he had been spat out from the belly of some enormous giant. He staggered from the dizziness for a moment, then opened his eyes and realized he was standing in the school auditorium.
“What is this?”
Our school auditorium should have been completely destroyed. When was it repaired? The white-haired man, who had finally come to his senses in the dizzying situation, stood there blankly, unable to understand what was happening to him now.Did I die and come to hell?Is this what hell is like? While the white-haired man stood still, the sound of murmuring came from somewhere.
Murmur murmur.
What is it? Did reinforcements come? What good would it be if they come only now?The white-haired man frowned and narrowed his eyes sharply. At that moment, a familiar voice pierced the man’s eardrums.
“Lee Ro-un! What are you doing right now!”
Lee Ro-un.That was his name. When the white-haired man, Ro-un, reflexively turned around, he saw a familiar face that matched that familiar voice.
“Hurry up and say a few words about how you feel. Everyone is waiting.”
An old man who looked like a plump toad pestered Ro-un.The eyes Ro-un had sharply raised now held confusion.
“Huh. It’s the principal.”
Why is this person here?He had heard that this was the person who pulled out first long before the academy collapsed and the Big Wave swept in.The principal with his toad-like cheeks trembled at Ro-un’s words.Conscious of the gazes around them, the principal rolled his eyes around, then with effort lifted the corners of his mouth and spoke.
“Ahem. ‘The principal,’ you say. Did you not usually call me Principal, with proper respect?”“Deserter,”“More importantly, you need to give your speech, and quickly. Everyone is waiting.”
The principal, who looked like a toad, spoke in a hurry.
“Speech…?”“The student council president’s greeting!”
The student council president’s greeting? That was something I had done at the entrance ceremony for the second-year students. Why was he suddenly bringing up something from the past?Ro-un looked around.
“Now that I look, it feels kind of similar to the day of the entrance ceremony for the second-years.”“Similar? Today is the entrance ceremony!”
The principal who looked like a toad shouted angrily, his face flushed red.Ah. He turned into a fire toad. His face even looked similar to one when he was angry. Is it because this is hell?Is this one of those moments where your life flashes before your eyes before you die?
“The fire toad is way too old a memory though.”
Ro-un couldn’t understand this situation. He was sure he had been swallowed by the Big Wave and arrived in the afterlife, so what was this vivid illusion that felt so real.Even if this was that life-flashing moment, wasn’t this way too long?
Murmur murmur.
The auditorium was noisy. When he looked down, all he saw were current students. There wasn’t a single unfamiliar face. Every one of them looked exactly as he remembered.
‘Seeing that even the ones who had died are here, I guess this really is hell.’
These hell bastards. The service is impressive.Sure, this wasn’t the moment when my life first started to go wrong, but it was the farthest point in time when I thought I could still turn everything back.Impressed by hell’s special-grade service, Ro-un stepped up to the microphone.
“Ah, ah.”
It was not exactly the moment he had wanted, but there was something he had wanted to say to them one last time before he died.Ro-un let out a feeble laugh, then put on the outward smile he had worn all this time as student council president. In the auditorium that had quieted down, Ro-un opened his mouth with a gentle expression.
“I’m dropping out.”
A bomb dropped in the auditorium.
“What?”“What did the president just say?”“Did I hear that wrong?”“I think I dozed off for a second.”“You too? Me too.”
Not only the students, but also the teachers and officers sitting in a row on stage whispered with bewildered faces.
“R, Ro-un? What did you just say? Drop out? You misspoke, right?”
The principal who looked like a toad broke out in a cold sweat. It was a natural reaction, since the usually obedient student council president had dropped a bombshell in a place where honored guests were present.
‘Like I care.’
I was in the middle of venting the resentment that weighed heavily on my chest on my way to my final end. With the face of a saint, Ro-un made sure every one of them heard him clearly.
“I will be quitting the academy and stepping down as student council president.”
His voice was so clear that there was no way anyone could have misheard it.It was such precise control of magic power that one could only think, as expected of the student council president, but this was no time to be admiring it.
“What’s going on?”“The textbook student council president is dropping out?”“Hey. Slap my cheek for me.”“The president must have been possessed by some resident of the otherworld!”
The students, thrown into confusion, could not hide their shock as they looked up at Ro-un on the platform.Whether they did or not, Ro-un, who had cast off his last lingering regret before heading to the afterlife, turned his body with a relieved expression.
Step, step.
Ro-un, who had dropped the bomb, turned with a straight posture and came down from the platform.Once he stepped down, Ro-un walked through the students and out of the auditorium.
‘It was filthy being together with you all, so let’s never see each other again!’
Once I step through this door, would I be stepping through the entrance to hell? However, contrary to Ro-un’s expectations, what he saw was the familiar scenery of the academy.
“They even reproduced it all the way to this. Impressive.”
There was no sign of destruction, and the weather was clear.
“Ah, it seems they didn’t repair that.”
It wasn’t that there were absolutely no damaged places.Looking at the cracks and spots under repair from all the various incidents the students had caused, Ro-un made a thoroughly fed-up expression. These hell bastards. They really do a good job recreating things.
“Instead of those punks, you should be showing me the faces of my family.”
Do I actually have to go find the place where my family is myself?Couldn’t they just skip to it on their own? With a bothered look on his face, Ro-un headed toward the place where his family was waiting.
“Do I even have to reserve train tickets in hell?”
At the sight of this hell(?) that looked as if reality had been brought over as it was, Ro-un walked on with a displeased expression. For now, let’s go first and think later.
These hell bastards.
They really made me reserve an actual train ticket to get here? How far were they planning to go with this realism?Ignoring the glances that kept sneaking his way here and there on the way, Ro-un arrived at the columbarium where his family’s remains were enshrined.
“This place is still intact.”
Ro-un gave a faint smile at the intact appearance of the columbarium that, two years ago, in other words about a year after this scene he was seeing now, had been trampled by the residents of the otherworld in an incident that broke out all over the country.Back when the traffic accident happened, Ro-un had been the only one to survive, and even when the columbarium was destroyed, Ro-un had not been able to be with his family.
“Mom, Dad, Hyung, Noona. I’m here.”
Your foolish and stupid son has finally come to visit. With a face that looked like he was about to cry, Ro-un stroked the glass of the columbarium where his family’s remains were kept. The cold touch of the glass at his fingertips made his chest go cold.
“Wait.”
Cold?Ro-un’s hand dropped away.
“Do the dead feel cold too?”
He felt something off.The illusions he had vaguely thought were flashbacks or some service from hell no longer felt like illusions.
“If this is hell, should I not be seeing my family as they were in life instead of the columbarium?”
To accept the situation that lay before him, Ro-un closed his eyes and used a skill.
“[Purification]”
A skill that could remove status ailments such as Charm, Confusion, and Corruption swept through Ro-un’s body.Ro-un lightly closed his eyes and opened them again, then slowly raised his eyelids.
“…Nothing changed?”
At the reality before his eyes, Ro-un’s face was slowly painted with shock. What he had thought was some kind of deluxe hell service was actually reality.
“What on earth is going on?”
I was definitely swallowed by the Big Wave. The pain of my whole body being torn to pieces was still so vivid, so how could I be standing here perfectly fine?Ro-un hurriedly called up the system messages.Looking at the most recent message log, Ro-un’s eyes grew so wide they looked like they would pop out.
“Regression…?”
I went back in time?
