A few dragons flew into the sacred ground of the Black Dragons.
Usually, the sacred ground is occupied by ancient dragons nearing the end of their lives and newly born dragons. These dragons are required to stay in the sacred ground to inherit various knowledge from the ancient dragons.
Therefore, to dragons, the sacred ground signifies a holy place where death and birth coexist. This is a rule not only observed by the Black Dragons but by other dragons as well.
The Elder, who can be considered the leader of the sacred ground, is currently absent due to a long peace treaty between the Red Dragons and Black Dragons. Therefore, the current head of the sacred ground is the oldest ancient dragon, Diehegma.
Nies, who is in his youth, took this opportunity to visit Diehegma. Diehegma is like an uncle to Nies.
Now in his mid-thousands, Nies has a very belligerent personality and is the leader figure among the young dragons.
There was an important reason why Nies took advantage of the Elder’s absence to visit the sacred ground. Therefore, as soon as he saw Diehegma, Nies started to complain.
“Uncle! How long must we leave that arrogant human alone? I think it’s time to ignore the promise!”
Diehegma quickly understood what his nephew was talking about. The fact that the dragon race made a promise with humans itself was an exceptional case.
But Diehegma is an ancient dragon. He rarely gets excited. He simply answered Nies’ question calmly.
“I know what you want to say. But haven’t we already spoken about this?”
It’s always the same answer. But Nies had no intention of backing down today. Now that the Elder is absent, it’s an opportunity. There might not be another chance. That’s why Nies came fully prepared.
“But Uncle! You know well that we already have a shortage of dragons that can bear children. This is related to the survival of our Black Dragons. Especially Rurin, she is one of the few in her age group…!”
Nies suddenly shut his mouth while speaking. It would be troublesome if his true intentions came out unnecessarily.
Nies didn’t like that a female of his kin, whom he should rightfully possess, was held by a mere human. But now, he intended to appeal with something other than his true feelings.
It was fine to borrow strength because of those Red Dragons. But there’s no need to cower afterward.
They are the supreme race on this earth. It is absurd to be wary of anyone. That was Nies’ thought.
“Anyway, it’s not wrong. Recently, the number of females has been rapidly decreasing. Too many died in the last war! If we continue to neglect this, we will gradually decline. How long will we be dragged and trampled by the Red Dragons? Uncle! Peace with them will not last long! If that’s the case, what’s at stake is the survival of the Black Dragons. A promise with humans is not more important than the survival of our kin! It’s meaningless!”
“Calm down, Nies. We cannot defy the Elder’s will.”
“With all due respect, Uncle. What do you think of the honor lost by Beren, the Elder’s daughter? A person who has a great sinner as a daughter is still the elder! I think he should have stepped down. I’m saying you should be the elder, Uncle!”
“Nies! You are going too far. Shut your mouth!”
Diehegma’s aura filled the sacred ground. The anger in his voice surprised Nies, making him shut his mouth. Diehegma glared at Nies for a moment before speaking again. His voice was still stern.
“Indeed, Beren committed a great sin. It was high treason. But that has nothing to do with the Elder. It does not serve as a justification. However, since you keep saying so, do you mean you have a way? A way to bring back Rurin and punish that human without tarnishing our dragon’s honor?”
Diehegma didn’t particularly like El either. Naturally, his thoughts were similar to Nies’. He just thought there was no way. Besides, setting aside the promise, that human was indeed extraordinary.
If all the young ones gathered, it would be different, but that would make them a laughing stock to the Red Dragons and other races.
When Diehegma asked, Nies immediately spoke with an expression of ‘This is the moment’.
“Of course. I have a scheme. A way to create enough justification! No matter how strong, he’s just a human. This time, I plan to end it for sure. If it goes as I think, there will be no harm to our kin, Uncle!”
Nies was overflowing with confidence. It was because of this confidence that he came to see his Uncle. He had prepared everything to proceed as soon as he got permission.
Revenge on the arrogant human. And possessing Rurin. These two desires dominated Nies’ mind.
Nies, who had always regarded Rurin as a filthy being and tormented her since childhood, couldn’t stand the fact that his possession was given to a human.
As it had always been since childhood.
A filthy being must be trampled on for it to be satisfying.
Nies thought it was more fun than any game sweeping through the human world.
“A scheme, you say? As long as there is justification, I won’t oppose it. As long as there is a justification.”
It is true that the number of dragons being born is decreasing. Therefore, young ones who can increase the population are indeed very precious. Diehegma slowly nodded.
Of course, it was a backward thought.
El, who lived in the modern era, would have snorted in disdain.
Having received Diehegma’s permission, Nies secretly met with Veint of the Red Dragons. It was evidence that El was more of a thorn in his side than the Red Dragons, who could be considered enemies.
Furthermore, Nies’ ultimate goal was to become the next elder. Therefore, he desperately needed the honor of being the dragon who erased the greatest stain on their kin by bowing to a human.
Being the leader of the young dragons alone was not enough to fulfill Nies’ ambition.
Not only did they receive help from El, but rumors that a dragon of their kin was held hostage made them subtly ignored by the Reds and the Gold Dragons. The dissatisfaction among the young Black Dragons was considerable.
Therefore, Nies planned to eliminate El to solidify his position. As Diehegma said, justification was needed. So Nies made a proposal to one of the factions fighting for power among the Red Dragons, Veint and his group. Hoping they would take the bait.
“I’m saying we should help each other. Have you heard of ‘exchange of murder’? Reds and us are eternal enemies, but sometimes secret exchanges are necessary.”
“Exchange of murder? What benefit do I get from helping you?”
At Nies’ words, Veint snorted and looked at his group. Six dragons gathered in the vast valley.
Nies responded with a faint smile, gazing at Veint.
“I found out that there is a Red Dragon living near Greek City. I want you to use that Red Dragon. Set a trap for it. The reward is great. Isn’t your goal to take over all the Red Dragons? And the biggest obstacle to that is the Ronel faction, isn’t it?”
“You wretch! Where did you hear that? It’s ridiculous. There are no obstacles for me.”
Although he said that, Veint’s attitude clearly changed. The face that had been laughing saying there was nothing to hear turned serious. Honestly, Ronel was indeed a thorn in Veint’s side. Someone he wanted to kill even more than the Black Dragons, their main enemy.
“Hmm, so?”
Contrary to his answer, Veint showed interest.
When Veint spoke in a tone that implied he should hear the method, Nies nodded and replied.
“If Ronel is a thorn in your side, I also have one. That arrogant human, El.”
“Human? Ah, that one. The arrogant human who ate the Heart of the Lord.”
Veint also understood immediately and nodded. It was only natural since El had fought with the Red Dragons before.
“Of course, he’s arrogant, but he doesn’t concern me much. As you said, Ronel is more of a thorn in my side than a lowly human.”
“Hehe, exactly.”
“Exactly?”
“You don’t have the justification to deal with Ronel directly, do you?”
“That’s true.”
When Nies asked as if he knew everything, Veint nodded slightly.
“We will kill Ronel.”
“Ronel?”
The Black Dragons as a fighting race. Although the Red Dragons had a larger population, causing the Black Dragons to be outnumbered in the last war, the Black Dragons are stronger in pure one-on-one combat.
The Black Dragons have always been the strongest offensive race among the Gold Dragons, Red Dragons, and Blue Dragons.
But as their population drastically decreased, they went through a period of trials.
“An ambush is not difficult. You risk being exposed to your kin and failing, but I’m different. Also, I can borrow the power of treasures from the sacred ground. I have my Uncle’s permission.”
Of course, he didn’t mention the plan to conspire with the Red Dragons. He only spoke about the plan to trap and deal with El in a way he couldn’t escape.
“So? What do I have to do?”
Veint immediately responded to Nies’ words. There’s nothing better than having Ronel dealt with. There are too many eyes on him to deal with Ronel directly, and if he got caught secretly handling him, it would be a disaster.
On the other hand, if Nies handled it, the worst-case scenario would just be another war between the Reds and the Blacks.
Of course, if Nies had the Black treasure he confidently mentioned, it wouldn’t be impossible to handle Ronel without anyone noticing.
For Veint, it was a gamble worth taking.
For that reason, Veint took Nies’ bait. Nies nodded with a triumphant smile.
“Due to the aftermath of the last war, attacking human cities by dragons is currently prohibited by agreement. If we act first, it gives justification to other races. But dealing with a murderer of our kin is a different story. This is where the Red Dragon I mentioned earlier comes in.”
“The Red Dragon you mentioned earlier?”
“Yes.”
“Oh, the one near Greek City?”
“Yes. According to my informant, that arrogant human appeared near the dwarven mountains in that Red Dragon’s territory. Isn’t that enough of an excuse? If the Red Dragon, whose territory was invaded, is found dead in Greek City? Avenging the murder of their kin, whether by human or dragon, is not against the agreement. If the one living near Greek City hadn’t been a Red Dragon who recently contacted El, we wouldn’t be having this meeting. The pieces are in place, and now we just need to act.”
“Hahahahahaha!”
Veint began to laugh loudly at Nies’ words. The laughter, imbued with the aura of the Red Dragon, echoed through the deep mountain valley.
