His Majesty The King

King Eldred and Princess Erin sat across from Vim.
“Allow me to thank you once more. You have my gratitude for saving my daughter.”
“No, I merely lent a bit of a hand.”
“That is not true. Had you not appeared at that moment, my daughter might have been killed.”
It was true; if things had continued as they were, that was certainly a possibility. However, in Vim’s mind, the most he had done was deploy a Disconnection Barrier.
“Is there anything you desire? I shall provide almost anything within my power. Speak your wish—be it a title, a house, or gold.”
“No, I couldn’t possibly accept so much.”
Vim hadn’t acted with the intention of gaining anything, so he hadn’t expected a reward.
“Nay, the Royal Family has its pride to maintain. We cannot simply do nothing.”
As expected, it seemed unacceptable for the Royal Family to offer nothing to the person who had saved them. Indeed, from an outsider’s perspective, the image of the Royal Family would be poor if they showed no gratitude.
“In that case… could I perhaps be granted adventurer qualifications?”
“Huh?”
His Majesty Eldred wore a look of utter surprise.
“Is something the matter?”
Vim wondered if he had said something strange.
“Is that truly all you want?”
“Yes. It would actually be quite a help to me.”
To operate in a foreign country, one needs to establish a standing. Becoming an adventurer was the quickest way to do that and gain social credibility. After all, adventurer qualifications are officially issued by the state—though usually delegated to the Guild.
“I see. I shall have it arranged immediately. Furthermore, I heard the general circumstances from Erin. You have had quite a misfortune.”
“Yes. Thank you very much.”
It seemed Erin had already explained the reason Vim left the Empire.
“You should stay here tonight. You aren’t yet accustomed to our country, I imagine.”
“That would be a great help. I humbly accept your offer.”
Since he was still unfamiliar with the inner workings of this nation, he found such consideration deeply appreciated.
“Very well. Please, rest well. You there, show him to his quarters.”
The King called out to a nearby maid.
“As you command.”
Vim followed the maid as she led him through the palace.
“Please, use this room.”
After walking for a while, he was shown into what appeared to be a guest suite.
“Thank you.”
“If you require anything, please do not hesitate to ask.”
The room was filled with expensive furnishings, a canopy bed, large windows, and high ceilings. Everything about it was incredibly luxurious.
“Incredible…”
It was likely a room reserved for high-ranking nobles. It was so spacious that a single person felt out of place in it. Vim tentatively lay down on the bed. It was soft, plush, and felt wonderful.
How many years had it been since he felt such comfort? Before long, Vim let go of his consciousness and drifted off.
