26 — An Unexpected Local Specialty

The poisonous monster had appeared in a village about three hours away by carriage. When Arthur asked about the place, it was unexpectedly Tristan who answered.

“Ah, that village is famous for its Gokuuma Bird. Because they’re raised on a unique plant that only grows deep in the village, it gives them that distinctive, savory umami flavor.”

“Ho… then if we help them, they might serve us Gokuuma Bird as a token of thanks.”

“That would be lovely! That bird is incredibly delicious. If we do get some, shall I cook it for you?”

As Arthur’s enthusiasm grew, Kei also smiled cheerfully. Since the castle had chefs, she had never been able to serve him a homemade meal—but in this situation, she found the chance and spoke up.

She likely wanted Arthur, who enjoyed street food, to experience home cooking as well. Or maybe… she just wanted to play the older sister role a little.

“Nice!! Now I’m fired up!!”

“Hehe, please look forward to it. I’m excited to try freshly cooked Gokuuma Bird too!!”

Kei’s words raised Arthur’s motivation by 100!! He was that simple. Originally, Arthur was only trying to heal people out of a desire to beat Elaine. But the promise of Kei’s cooking and Gokuuma Bird had boosted his motivation even more.

And so, while they were talking about such things, they arrived at the village at the same time as Elaine’s carriage.

“My, my, to think not only the Saintess but even Lord Arthur has come…”

“Thank you for coming to greet us.”

“Spare me the greetings. Just take us to the ones who need treatment.”

An elderly man, likely the village chief, came to welcome Arthur and his group, but Arthur ended up rushing him. Elaine looked surprised, but it seemed Arthur was just in a hurry to eat Kei’s cooking.

“That is true… In a situation like this, treating the wounded takes precedence over formalities. Village Chief, the matter is urgent. Please lead the way. Lord Arthur seems quite eager as well.”

With those words, she looked at Arthur and smiled. That expression overlapped with the provocative grin Arthur had given her earlier… and it made Arthur come to a realization.

‘I see now… So this is your way of saying “I won’t lose to you.” Is that a declaration of war?! Fine! I’ll show you I’m better than you!!’

And with that completely off-base interpretation, Arthur steeled himself with newfound determination.
