The next day, Arthur left his manor and wandered around the castle.
After yesterday’s events, he realized that helping people in need would earn their gratitude, so he came to the castle, where there were more people.
Naturally, everyone working there knew who Arthur was.
Unfortunately, his reputation in the castle wasn’t exactly great.
Though he didn’t do anything blatantly unreasonable, his exceptional healing power earned him special treatment.
Upsetting him meant trouble, as other nobles would try to “handle it” preemptively— a situation the servants desperately wanted to avoid.
In short, they treated him like a walking minefield.
So when Arthur asked, “Is there anything troubling you?” everyone simply answered, confused and wary, “No, nothing at all.”
“Hm. What should I do…? I suppose it’s good that no one’s in trouble…”
Unaware that they were just avoiding him, Arthur took their answers at face value and continued wandering the halls.
“You’re telling me a commoner like you was healed!? Don’t tell me you seduced him with your body!”
“No…! I would never do something like that! And… I don’t think he’s the kind of person who would want that sort of thing!”
“What would a lowly maid like you know about Prince Arthur!?”
He overheard shouting nearby.
Curious, he peeked around a corner and saw a girl in a maid uniform being beratedby a nobleman in fancy clothing.
No—this wasn’t a conversation. The noble was clearly just harassing her.
‘Fuhahaha! This is my chance for a Good Deed!!’
For the sake of self-preservation, Arthur cheerfully rushed in to play the hero.
“That naïve fool… Wasting his healing power on some pathetic commoner girl… Hmph. A brat born of a whore… Wait—if I can make him obsessed with a woman, I could easily control him…”
Muttering with a disgusting grin, the man hadn’t noticed Arthur approaching.
Arthur knew exactly who he was.
This man was Lord Greed—the same noble who had come up in Marianne’s story.
He was one of Arthur’s close associates and frequently requested healing for people.
But when the revolution began and the war was clearly lost, he abandoned Arthur and fled the country.
Later, thanks to Arthur’s former fiancée’s investigation, it was discovered that this man had embezzled Arthur’s money.
A vile, greedy man.
Just watching him act all high and mighty irritated Arthur.
Memories from his past life made him want to say something.
Then he realized—the maid being harassed was the same girl who had spilled the tea.
He quickened his pace.
“Hey, maid! Use your body to seduce Prince Arthur. If you do that, I’ll give you a special bonus. Not a bad deal, right?”
“What…!? I didn’t become a maid for that kind of thing!!”
“Hmph. Do you really think a commoner like you can defy me? I can make sure your family loses their jobs too.”
“No…!”
He couldn’t make out much from afar, but Arthur could see the maid’s troubled face—and felt a strong urge to help her.
After all, she had been one of the very few who spoke to him kindly when he was imprisoned in his previous life.
He might be ignorant of the world, but he wasn’t ungrateful.
“What exactly is going on between me and her?”
“Wha—Prince Arthur!?”
“Lord Arthur…!!”
Arthur’s sudden appearance made Lord Greed’s voice tighten.
It was only natural.
Rumors said nobles had been demoted just because they angered Arthur.
Meanwhile, the maid’s face softened— perhaps remembering how gently he had healed her the other day.
Seeing that made Arthur unexpectedly happy.
“I was simply scolding a maid who caused you trouble, Lord Arthur. A maid serving royalty must not be careless, even if she’s a commoner. Wouldn’t you agree?”
Perhaps fearing something might be said, Lord Greed gave the maid a sharp look as he spoke.
He was likely referring to the spilled tea.
“If that’s the issue, then it’s my fault. I’m sorry. So please… could you let this go?”
Arthur bowed his head to prove she wasn’t at fault— and Lord Greed gasped.
“What… Prince Arthur apologized…? He used to treat servants like air, yet now he’s apologizing…?”
Lord Greed’s shock was understandable.
Until now, Arthur really had treated maids like they didn’t exist.
He didn’t use violence, true—but he was selfish, and never paid them any attention.
He had never stepped into an argument like this, and certainly never bowed his head for a maid.
That cold treatment had made the other servants feel a distance— and even resentment toward royalty.
Some had even grumbled, “All royals are insufferable.”
That was how people viewed Arthur: an arrogant, ignorant, spoiled brat.
So the sight of him apologizing left Lord Greed stunned.
“Please raise your head, Lord Arthur. As expected of Your Highness—so kind even to a mere maid. You truly are kingly. If you say so, then I have nothing more to add. Maid—what I said earlier was just a joke. Don’t speak of it to anyone.”
With an exaggerated reaction, Lord Greed expressed his “admiration” and threw some shallow praise at Arthur before trying to make his exit.
He really did look like someone who respected Arthur—that alone was impressive.
‘In my past life, I was fooled by that. But now… I know your true colors.’
He was clearly trying to leave in a hurry. He must have something to hide.
Convinced of that, Arthur grabbed his shoulder with a sly grin.
“Perfect timing… Morgan’s been nagging me lately, saying that a prince should at least do some work. Would you mind bringing me the ledger of my finances? I’ve decided I’ll start calculating things myself.”
“Wh… What?”
At that, Lord Greed’s eyes widened and his face turned pale.
Seeing this, Arthur smirked in satisfaction.
‘Fuhahahaha! Just as I thought, you bastard!! You were already dipping into my assets even this far in the past!!’
Arthur was no saint.
He wasn’t about to show kindness to someone who abandoned him.
In fact, watching someone he disliked squirm was quite entertaining.
“Lord Arthur… you can ignore that little girl Morgan. Please leave everything to me…”
“So you’re saying I should just let her keep making fun of me?”
“…Understood. I’ll prepare it immediately.”
When Arthur gave him a sharp glare, Lord Greed gave up trying to persuade him and fled the scene.
He knew Arthur had been spoiled growing up—once he made up his mind, he wouldn’t budge.
And then Arthur and the maid were left alone.
“Thank you, Lord Arthur.”
“Ah, don’t mention it. I’m just glad I could help you.”
Arthur smiled, but the maid furrowed her brows.
What was that reaction about?
The answer came quickly.
“But… you healed me before too, and now you’ve helped me again. Why would you do that for someone like me?”
She asked cautiously— a natural question.
Arthur gave a self-deprecating laugh.
‘Ah, that’s right… I asked her the exact same thing once.’
The memory filled him with both nostalgia and a pang of guilt.
After all, he hadn’t known anything about her.
He hadn’t even tried to know.
“Why, huh… That’s what I want to ask. Why did you… help someone like me, who didn’t even remember your name after all those years?”
“Helped you…?”
She looked puzzled—and it made sense. To Arthur too, it was a mystery.
Why had she stayed by the side of someone who didn’t even know her name?
And then, he remembered…
Her quiet devotion…
