Dairam Island, downtown Dallon.
Tatata! Bang bang! Bang bang bang!
The Polia Kingdom Army could be seen moving in groups and firing at the Dairam forces resisting them. Because of this attack, the Dairam soldiers who had been hiding behind cover and firing continuously could only scream and collapse.
As of today, the year had moved into May. More than a week had already passed since the fighting began. Amid this, the bad news for the Dairam people was that they had raised a fairly large force and attempted to occupy the city, but all of those attempts had ended in failure.
The Polia Kingdom Army fought extremely well. In particular, at the beginning of the war, they had achieved victory by practically massacring the Dairam army that had charged in with large numbers, and they had successfully defended the city hall building so the enemy could not seize it.
The next step naturally became advancing to eliminate the remnants after dealing with the large enemy force. In particular, they continued fighting while placing tanks at the front and protecting the infantry, creating a very favorable situation.
The machine guns mounted on the tanks continuously killed the Dairam people who had set up defensive lines along the main roads, and from time to time, tank guns fired and blew away their cover. Of course, tanks were not invincible, so there were also occasional situations where Molotov cocktails flew in and set them on fire.
Amid this, there were fighters that would fly in and drop bombs as much as needed if contacted, so the situation could only flow far too easily. In truth, even though parts of the city were burning everywhere, they were not indiscriminately bombing every area.
Bombs only fell on places where those presumed to be soldiers were positioned, and shells fell through naval gunfire from warships, blowing away the surrounding areas. Because of this situation, the Dairam people who had originally lived in the city trembled in fear, and eventually, movements to flee the city began to occur.
Even if they had shown a strong degree of resistance, Beto, the biological weapons, were roaming around while shelling was also being carried out, so everyone had no choice but to be frightened. They even said that tens of thousands had armed themselves and gone to attack city hall, only to suffer annihilation, so naturally, even more people had to flee.
As a result, the city gradually had no choice but to expand into Polia Kingdom Army territory. Most of the main districts had already been occupied by the kingdom army, and biological weapons were roaming through alleys here and there, creating threats, so the Dairam army was in a position where they could only be pushed back even further.
“Here! This place is suspicious!”
When a Polia Kingdom Army soldier who had entered a building came back out and said that, the fellow soldiers around him rushed over in a crowd. Before their eyes stood a three-story building whose ceiling had completely collapsed. At that, everyone asked as if wondering what was suspicious about it.
“Why is this place suspicious?”
“Was there something there?”
“Look over there inside. There are traces of someone using fire.”
“Really?”
A fireplace could be seen in the living room, and there were clearly ashes there that seemed to have been used not long ago. Someone reached out and pressed them, then immediately lit up both eyes and spoke.
“It has not even been an hour since the fire was put out. Someone was definitely inside this building.”
“So they really are remnants?”
As they spoke, their killing intent could be seen in the way they aimed their gun muzzles. The soldiers’ perception of the Dairam people was not good. They were people of the same kingdom, but now they were nothing more than enemies who had to be shot dead unconditionally on sight. Those soldiers immediately began searching the interior.
The inside became noisy with the sound of them walking around while stepping on the wooden floors. Since dozens of soldiers went through the rooms, the search could only end quickly. When everyone realized they could not find anything, they thought that perhaps the enemy had already fled somewhere else.
Just as they thought that, there were people approaching them.
“We are allies. Team 5, belonging to the Reconnaissance Search Battalion.”
“Ah, welcome.”
Click! When someone of a higher rank than them approached, everyone saluted. Of course, their gazes were soon directed at the biological weapon called Beto. At their gazes, the person who had introduced himself as Team 5 spoke.
“We heard that something suspicious had been detected here, so we came since we happened to be nearby.”
“Yes, there were traces of a fireplace being used. However, the search found nothing. It seems they have already fled somewhere else.”
“For now, we will use these ones to search.”
“You mean using the biological weapons?”
“They have a better sense of smell than dogs, so they are quite helpful in searches.”
“Oh, then they will be helpful.”
He said they would be helpful, but in truth, since the search had already ended, he felt as if there was no way to find anything and wondered whether they were doing something pointless. The moment he thought that, the Team 5 leader immediately gave the Beto, the biological weapons, an order to find the Dairam people.
The creatures rushed straight into the building, and everyone hurriedly moved aside, worried they might get in the way of these biological weapons. The biological weapon Beto that entered like that pressed their noses straight to the wooden floor, showing behavior as if they were smelling something.
As around three of them roamed around the building and smelled things, they soon let out a kyaaa! kind of bizarre cry. At that sound, the Team 5 leader’s expression hardened, and he immediately raised his firearm and spoke to the soldiers around him.
“It seems our Beto have found something.”
“Pardon? They found something?”
“Follow me!”
As soon as those words ended, Team 5 entered the building, and the other soldiers moved behind them. They headed toward the end of the first-floor corridor. Sound came from inside the room at the end. When they immediately approached, they saw the creatures lifting their forelegs and repeatedly pressing down on the floor.
“There is something below there?”
“What is there?”
“It is an expression that they found something.”
“Something under the floor…”
Padadadak! Papapapak!
No sooner had he finished speaking than bullets poured out, piercing through the wooden floor. They struck the Beto’s bodies, but bullets of that level could not pierce their skin and simply bounced weakly to the floor. Meanwhile, those who had reached the door had to hurriedly jump outside amid the hail of bullets.
“They c-certainly seem to have found something.”
“Was there a secret space there? For now, I should order them to break the floor and enter.”
Muttering that, the Team 5 leader immediately put one of the whistles hanging around his neck in his mouth and blew hard. Piiiik-! Piiiik-! Piiiik-! When he blew it three times in succession, the Beto that had simply been taking the bullets raised their claws and began fiercely scratching at the wooden floor.
Crack! Scrape!
The wooden floor was being torn apart. Although the Beto had small and agile bodies of about 30 kilograms, they possessed considerable strength as biological weapons, so something like this was more than possible. The moment the wooden floor broke apart like that, even more bullets came flying.
While being hit by those bullets, they began running straight down beneath the floor they had opened. In the midst of that scene, all sorts of curses could suddenly be heard from inside. Gunshots continued right after that, and through them, it became clear that enemies had been hiding down there.
“W-What do we do now?”
“What else would we do? We do this.”
At some point, he put the whistle in his mouth and blew it long, making a piiiik-! noise. At that sound, screams from those who seemed to be under attack could soon be heard continuously from inside. The Beto, the biological weapons, had launched their attack.
Woof! Woof!
Soon, barking-like sounds could be heard from below. It was the sound made by Beto. And from those sounds, they could tell that the situation was over. Reassured by that, the team leader and Team 5 approached the opened floor to look inside. They took out flashlights and began examining the inside.
Inside, there were people who seemed to have been taken down by the Beto. All of them had their throats bitten off or seemed to have died after some part of their bodies had been torn away. There appeared to be around ten people. As he looked at them, he soon saw what seemed to be another door on one side. It was a wooden door.
“A door.”
“There may be other enemies in there.”
“It is suspicious, so we need to examine it carefully.”
Saying that, the Team 5 leader immediately moved the Beto again this time as well. Those things were perfect for this sort of work. When he signaled them along with the order to break the door, the Beto moved again and began scratching at the wooden door with their claws raised.
Crack-!
It was fortunate that it was a wooden door. If it had been an iron door, he thought it might have been difficult for them to break through like that. At that moment, bullets suddenly burst out from that wooden door as well. Bang bang! Bang bang! Bang! From the gunshots heard inside, he could tell that there were not that many people.
“If only they threw away their guns, they could live.”
The Team 5 leader muttered to himself. In truth, since they could not issue an exact command system, the condition for not attacking while identifying and attacking presumed enemies was for them to throw away their weapons. As long as they followed that, there would be no reason for them to be attacked by the Beto.
Of course, there was no way the enemy would know this. Around three minutes passed like that, and when no more sounds could be heard, the cry of woof woof! soon rang out. This meant that the situation was over. At that, the Team 5 leader and the team members went down through the opened floor. The ordinary soldiers were also following them down.
They entered while remaining heavily on guard, stepping over the corpses and passing through the broken door. Then, what came into view was the sight of around five people lying dead. However, among them, only one person had not died and was seen raising both hands.
“Do not move!”
“I-I surrender.”
“Arrest that bastard!”
Seeing him surrender, the Team 5 leader thought that he had somehow managed to survive. It seemed he had not been attacked by the Beto because he was not holding a gun. Meanwhile, the inside became visible. For some reason, it looked unusual. A map of this city was placed on the wallpaper, and communication equipment had been installed on one side.
“What is this place?”
“…….”
“You plan to keep your mouth shut? It seems you need to be beaten a few times to come to your senses.”
Since there was no such thing as human rights, the Team 5 leader said he would use violence to make him open his mouth. The gazes of the others likewise became murderous. At this, the man who had been bound in handcuffs seemed slightly frightened and hurriedly explained what kind of place this was.
“T-This is a contact office.”
“A contact office, meaning a place where you contact your leadership?”
“Th-That is right.”
“Where is the leadership now?”
“That…”
“As expected, you need to be beaten to come to your senses.”
“I will properly tenderize him. Leave him to me.”
Just as he was about to approve the words of a fairly large man who raised his fists and cracked his body while loosening up, the man urgently confessed what he knew to them.
“The leaders should all be gathered there right now!”
“There? Where exactly are you talking about?”
Excited by the words of the man who seemed to know something, the Team 5 leader pointed at the map hanging on the wall and asked again. At this, the man hesitated, but soon pointed to one place and spoke.
“There is a place called Days Brewery, and below its basement level, in a place built like this one, all the leaders are gathered.”
“Days Brewery? That is certainly the truth, right?”
“It is the truth… If the leaders are there, will you spare me?”
“You are asking to be spared? Where did your pride as a Dairam person go, for you to ask to be spared? Usually, they keep their mouths shut.”
“I… do not want to die. Please spare me.”
“Good. I like your honesty. If everything you just said is true, I will spare you. On top of that, even if you go to a prisoner camp, you may be treated somewhat well.”
If the location of the leadership was real, the moment they swept that place away, the head of the Dairam people would collapse, and they would be able to attack and collapse them much more easily. Having learned the location of the leadership in an unexpected place, the Team 5 leader moved with the thought that he had to report this fact as quickly as possible.
Meanwhile, the Dairam man who was being dragged away amid this situation could not help cursing inwardly. To think that… he had never expected to be captured in a place like this. To begin with, it would be more accurate to say he had not even thought this place would be discovered.
‘Damn it, to think that I, Luson, would be captured so pathetically in a place like this…’
That was right. The captured person was none other than the one who had stood at the forefront even among the leadership. The reason he was here was that he had secretly moved to this place for a moment in order to change the operation. In that situation, he had been captured like this, and at the same time, he had revealed the location of the leadership in order to save himself.
Even as he was dragged out, he could not help flinching when he saw the Beto growling. Seeing them in person, he could not help thinking that those things were extremely terrifying creatures. Even bullets did not work properly on them, and they had bitten to death his subordinates who had been guarding this place.
Since things like that were roaming all over the city, it was only natural that the hearts of the Dairam people were collapsing.
‘My plan was not supposed to be like this, so why is nothing going the way I want?’
The confidence he had possessed at first could no longer be seen in him. Before overwhelming power, he had no choice but to keenly feel how absurdly small his own thoughts and strength were.
Luson was dragged away like that, and based on the information that was soon delivered, the Polia Kingdom Army immediately began an operation to wipe out the leadership. They promptly raided Days Brewery, and although they faced stronger resistance than expected, in the end, since the people there were practically trapped, their annihilation could only be a matter of moments.
As a result, the Dairam people’s will to resist was collapsing even faster.
