  1. About the World

-The world was named Pangea. It was a single continent surrounded by the sea, and it was believed that the end of the world lay beyond those waters.

-Demi-humans such as elves and dwarves once existed, but by now, everyone had become intermingled. The people of the entire world were of mixed blood. Which racial characteristics were manifested depended on the individual or their specific lineage.

-Four nations existed within Pangea.

-In order of landmass from largest to smallest, these nations were Pace of the north, Shark of the west, Namut of the south, and Isu of the east.

-A day consisted of twenty-four hours, a week was seven days, and a year spanned three hundred and sixty days.

-Monsters, dungeons, holy relics, and magic existed in this world.

-Every nation worshipped a nameless monotheistic religion. In Shark alone, the founding Saint Fata was also an object of worship. Idolatry was strictly forbidden.

  1. About Magic

-There were five attributes in total: those that targeted the human body, and those that targeted fire, water, earth, wind, and cold.

-However, these categories merely indicated what was being manipulated by magical power; the fundamental principle remained the same.

-Magic was not the act of creating something from nothing, but rather the art of manipulating something through magical power.

-Magic required visualization. Magic was invoked by forming a strong mental image of the phenomenon one wished to cause.

-Incantations existed, but they were merely supplementary means to immerse oneself in one’s own visualization.

-Magic could not be used if there was a gap between the visualization and reality. Consequently, magic could not be used on areas that were not clearly perceived. For example, magic could not be used on a distant location that was not clearly visible. Likewise, magic could not be used through a wall when the conditions on the other side were completely unknown. This was because it was impossible to form an image that aligned with reality.

  1. About Investigations

-Incidents were primarily investigated by detectives belonging to their respective nations.

-In Pangea, because magic was a fundamental skill where the scope of what could be achieved varied greatly by individual, concepts such as objectivity or universality were weak.

-For that reason, each detective attempted to solve cases using their own unique methodology and investigative theories.

-No standards had been established to determine the reliability of evidence or the validity of reasoning.

-Furthermore, organized investigation was not an established concept, and no investigative methods were defined by law.

-Because they relied on evidence and reasoning from such detective investigations, criminal trials were also dependent on the individual judges.

-Thanks to a thesis written by the protagonist, Van, attention was beginning to gather around objective and universal standards, logic, and organized investigation, bringing a breath of fresh air to the field.

  1. Miscellaneous

-Holy relics existed. These were items from before the founding of the four nations with unknown origins, possessing effects and durability that could not be replicated.

-Dungeons existed. A dungeon was a holy relic in itself, constructed of indestructible materials. They were mysterious structures that continuously produced monsters and items, and they contained “Return Stones”—holy relics that allowed one to warp back to the dungeon entrance.

-Electricity and complex machinery had not yet been invented. Horse-drawn carriages, bowguns, and similar technologies existed.
