The pond was very deep. So deep it was impossible to see the bottom.

Compared to the fast-moving waterfalls or the ebbing flow of streams, the pond was extremely quiet, and there wasn’t even a single ripple in the middle.

There seemed to be a black fish with an extremely large head swimming leisurely in the waters.

Song Caitang wanted to take a closer look, so besides stepping onto the bamboo raft, she took a few steps forward to stand right at the edge of the raft.

She didn’t think much of it, but if there were someone else around, they would have been very worried for her. This was too dangerous! She was too far from land and too near the water, so she could fall in if she weren’t careful!

But she still couldn’t see it clearly.

Song Caitang leaned forward but still couldn’t see it, so she decided to squat down…

But before that could happen, the sound of something cutting through the air resounded. A dark figure came hurtling toward the shore like a strong gust of wind, flying across the water. His body moved as powerfully as a hawk, and he used his large hand to grab hold of Song Caitang’s arm.

Song Caitang was not only taken by surprise, but her first reaction wasn’t to ask why he was doing this. Her instinct was to move her elbow and get this hand off her.

Doing that only made the raft shake violently and sent ripples across the pond. The moving waters began to push the raft in unpredictable directions, and it was hard to decide where to place her feet. At this rate, she might fall into the water!

The man’s expression fell as he moved his hand downward to hold Song Caitang’s waist firmly. He used his toes to leap into the sky, and the two of them flew toward the shore.

And just like that, Song Caitang was forced to become part of a classic scene from a Chinese wuxia TV drama.

She was being held by a man, flying in the sky. The sound of wind was in her ears; her hair flittered prettily through the wind, and the air smelled faintly of flowers.

A large and strong hand was holding onto her waist, and she couldn’t get it off her at all. She was in a very stable position right now, and she didn’t feel any anxiety from going against gravity. Somehow, she felt rather safe.

She couldn’t see the man’s features clearly from her angle and could only see his profile from below his chin.

His skin was bronze, and his jaw was chiseled. His lips were pursed tightly, his nose bridge was high, and his brows were bold. Both his silhouette and his aura exuded a very strong, manly feel.

Any other woman might have felt her face redden, and her heart palpitate, and they might have felt so shy. But it was too bad…

She was not any other woman.

“You crazy woman! Were you trying to kill yourself?!”

Once they landed and she was on both feet, the man immediately let her go as though he couldn’t stand holding her and spoke in a fairly unfriendly tone of voice as well.

Song Caitang was confused by his words.

But after she recalled the situation earlier, she realized what just happened.

She was a young lady who had gone unaccompanied to this deserted and dangerous pool of water. Not only was she unafraid, but she had stepped onto the bamboo raft by the side, walked to its very edge, and leaned forward…

Either she was trying to kill herself, or something was wrong with her brain, and she was going to get herself killed.

This man had “lent a helping hand”, so…the young lady was supposed to be grateful?

Too bad – she liked water very much and didn’t think there was anything wrong with going near it. If the temperature of the water wasn’t too low, she had thought of going for a short swim to enjoy the peace and happiness of being surrounded by water. How could that be dangerous? Where would the danger come from?

Besides, this man’s attitude was really poor. Saving someone’s life was a good deed, and a person with such good character ought to be praised. But the words he uttered and his subconscious mannerisms…what was that for?

This crazy woman? Trying to kill herself?

And that obvious disdain in the way he behaved.

How irritating.

She pushed away some stray strands of hair and stood and spoke in a way that was more arrogant and disdainful than him, “That is none of your business.”

The man glanced at her from the corner of his eye, and his eyes narrowed, “Are you…calling me a nosy parker?”

Song Caitang met his eyes without fear, “Yep!”

She finally had a good look at his face.

He had very defined features and an unapproachable air around him. The word “arrogance” seemed written all over his face. His brows were full and were a little close to his eyes. He didn’t look the least bit reserved. His presence was stifling and kept people at arm’s length.

This person seemed to be born with the air of an aristocrat. He was relaxed, yet he exuded the aura of a ruler, of one in a position above others.

Indeed, his figure was perfect. His muscles looked like they were about to burst out of his clothes, and he was filled with vitality. Very manly.

But none of that was important. The problem with him was that…

He kept moving as though he was trying to shake off every water droplet from his shoes. His eyes were narrowed like he was extremely annoyed. This reaction…seemed a little over the top.

The man folded his arms as he kept his eye on Song Caitang as if he were looking at a stupid young woman who was being insensible.

After some time, he snorted and said, “Whatever. A woman like you wouldn’t know how dangerous water can be.”

His contemptuous, “You’re a woman, so I’ll give in, and I won’t argue with you” attitude made her even angrier.

Song Caitang raised her brows, “I know how to swim!”

“Oh WOW,” said the man as he gave her two condescending claps. His voice dripped with sarcasm as he went on, “Someone once said that even those who drown also knew how to swim. You know how to swim, but you’ve never heard of this?”

Song Caitang did not shift her gaze at all. She noticed the nasty glint in his eyes when he mentioned water, she saw how irritated he was as he tried to shake off all the water on his shoes even though there wasn’t much in the first place, and also, what he did just now…

He was clearly a highly skilled martial artist, and scooping someone into the sky was clearly child’s play to him. There had been no need to fly in such a great hurry and take so much effort to avoid the water…

And then, the moment they got to land, he was being so nasty to a young lady like her. That certainly wasn’t necessary either.

It wasn’t hard to come to a conclusion.

“You’re afraid of water?”

The man’s gaze suddenly turned frosty, “It’s alright for a woman to be dumb because you can fix that by speaking less and listening more when others speak about the world. But if you try to be a smart aleck, then…that’s not good.”

There was no need to observe any further. Song Caitang stared confidently at him and said resolutely, “You’re afraid of water.”

The man took two steps forward and came close to her. His expression was terrifying, and the pressure he exerted was great, “Are you always like this? You enjoy irritating others?”

“And what about you? You enjoy pretending to be a hero, saying things you don’t mean, and refusing to talk about your fears?”

Song Caitang wasn’t afraid at all and even smiled at him, “This is an illness and has to be treated.”

This man spoke nastily, but he wasn’t a bad person. He was afraid of water, yet he was willing to take the risk and rescue her. He seemed to find women troublesome and made offensive remarks, but no matter how angry he was by her rebuttal, he never raised his voice or got violent…

Song Caitang suddenly felt that this man was very interesting.

He seemed rather chauvinistic but also had the indignation of a teenager who refused to admit defeat. And their fates crossed in an interesting manner, too.

She loved water, while he was afraid of water.

“The more afraid you are, the more that thing will bother you, which will make you even more afraid. If you look at it squarely and face it, then you’d be able to make progress.”

She offered a suggestion very sincerely. Mental illness was real.

But the man merely scoffed, “Women are troublesome indeed.” He then turned to walk away as though she was the only character in a drama. Like a person who took great pains to prove themselves to another person who actually didn’t care at all.

Song Caitang’s smile widened. This child was so interesting!

Actually, he wasn’t really a child and looked like he was around twenty years old or so. But Song Caitang had passed that age after studying for her degree, and after working for some years, she had become very mature. This man did seem very young to her.

“Wait!” Song Caitang suddenly remembered something and called out to him.

The man scoffed and seemed very impatient, “If you want to throw yourself into the water, you can go ahead. I promise not to interfere this time.”

“It’s not about that. I want to ask you to help me take something.” Song Caitang pointed at something hanging on a tree branch not too far away, “Do you see that piece of cloth there? You’ve already been a nosy parker for a while, so you might as well continue being one now.”

She had noticed that piece of cloth when she had first walked over. Her work had heightened her sensitivity to such things, and she had immediately thought that it might be linked to the case. But the cloth was in a branch that was too high for her, so she could only see it but couldn’t take it down, and she initially planned to tell Wen Yuansi about it after she went back. But since she had a highly skilled martial artist right here…she wouldn’t have to go through the trouble of telling Wen Yuansi and get him to take it down for her.

The man’s brows were furrowed very deeply, and he stared at Song Caitang as though he were staring at something unknown and incomprehensible to him, “You’re a woman! Do you have any shame at all? How could you just get close to a man and tell him to do things for you?”

“It can’t be helped. I’m a woman, so I have to be aware of my position, and I shouldn’t try to be too smart. If I can’t do it, I have to get help.” Song Caitang fluttered her eyelashes, “Wasn’t that what you taught me just now?”

His brows became even more tightly knit. It took a few moments before he finally squeezed some words out, “Are you…Are you trying to be cutesy?”

Song Caitang could hardly believe her ears. Which part of this was cute?! She couldn’t understand his logic at all.

Then again…

“If you say so.”

Her eyes twinkled, and her smile was even more charming and bright now.

This man was so interesting, so she couldn’t miss any chance to tease him!

The man looked like he had goosebumps all over his skin. He swiftly ran up the tree trunk and got the cloth for Song Caitang.

“Don’t act cutesy in front of just any man,” His eyes were narrowed slightly, and there was a faint glint in his eyes,

“It’s very dangerous.”
