Toko-senpai quietly brought her coffee cup to her lips. She was the kind of woman who looked like a painting even in a simple gesture like this. After placing the coffee back on the table, she spoke calmly.
“I understand how you feel, but I cannot do that.”
“Is it because I’m not good enough for you as a partner?”
Well, that was only natural. For me, if it’s Toko-senpai, I’d be happy to. But she has the right to choose her partners. Anyone can see that I’m not in her league. Still, being told “no” left me feeling incredibly frustrated.
…Am I really that much inferior to Kamokura?
…My girlfriend was stolen by him, and even after finding out, is Toko-senpai so devoted to him that she won’t let anyone else touch her?
Compared to Kamokura, I felt pathetically miserable.
“It’s not that,” Toko-senpai began, speaking slowly as if reasoning with herself. “There are three main reasons why I won’t cheat.”
“First: ‘I haven’t personally confirmed yet if Tetsuya is truly cheating with Karen-san.’”
“There’s no doubt about it, is there? I have the photos of their messages right here.”
“Yes, it’s almost certainly true. But there is a possibility they were forged. In the past, there was a man who told me ‘Kamokura is seeing another woman’ just to try and break us up.”
“I would never do something like that!”
“I believe you aren’t that kind of person. But isn’t it possible that you are being deceived? What if these images are just a cruel prank by Karen-san?”
I fell silent. I didn’t think that was the case, but I had no evidence to prove her wrong.
“The second reason: ‘If you and I cheat here, we lose the moral high ground to blame them.’”
“Lose the moral high ground?” I repeated.
“Exactly. I don’t know what you plan to do with Karen-san, but if the cheating is a fact, I intend to break up with Tetsuya. When that happens, I don’t want to give him the chance to say, ‘Well, you cheated too, didn’t you?’ I must come to the table with clean hands!”
I see. That was a logical argument, very much in character for her. But…
“Toko-senpai, aren’t you frustrated? To just be cheated on and simply walk away… Don’t you want to get back at him?”
“That is my third reason.”
“What do you mean?”
“I won’t settle for a ‘normal’ revenge. I have to make Tetsuya feel a regret so deep he’d rather be dead… I won’t let him feel like ‘It’s fine because I still have Karen’ after we break up. I will make him taste a level of despair and regret that makes him think, ‘I’d rather just die.’”
For a moment, I thought I saw a cold, blue flame flicker in Toko-senpai’s eyes. Even as a fellow victim, the aura of pure, concentrated rage she emitted sent a shiver down my spine. I swallowed hard and asked:
“Concretely… how are you going to do that?”
“Well…” She crossed her arms and rested her chin on her fist, thinking. “First, I’ll make him fall for me even harder. Much more than now—until he’s completely addicted to me.”
“And then?”
“Then, when he reaches the point where he can’t bear to be away from me, I’ll dump him ruthlessly. Yes… if we’re going to ‘cheat,’ that’s the timing. I’ll declare right in front of him: ‘I’m going to spend the night with this person now.’ He won’t have any way to stop me. After all, he’s the one who cheated. Meanwhile, I will have formally ended things and can walk away with someone else with my head held high. For him, there could be no greater humiliation.”
My first thought upon hearing this was: She is terrifying.
It’s true—if the woman you love most told you to your face, “I’m breaking up with you right here, right now, and I’m going to spend the night with this man,” the shock would feel like the world was collapsing. And if it were your own fault, you’d be powerless. You could only cling to them pathetically and beg for forgiveness. There could be no better revenge.
“So… at that time, you’ll be with me?”
The stupid question slipped out before I could stop it. Toko-senpai looked down at me with cold, piercing eyes.
“I don’t know yet. I don’t intend to sell myself cheap. I don’t want to be the kind of woman who sleeps with someone just for ‘revenge.’”
Typical Toko-senpai. She’s on a different level—it was almost cool. Well, considering her pride and her “rank” as a woman, it made sense. I felt a twinge of loneliness, but…
Then, Toko-senpai spoke again, her voice slightly softened with kindness.
“That said, at this stage, you and I are comrades in the same situation. Let’s form a joint front to make them regret what they’ve done. When the final moment comes… if you have polished yourself enough to be a man worthy of me, I might consider it then.”
The final moment…
That was the moment she described:
When the partner is most in love with you, you dump them and declare you are spending the night with another man.
I imagined that moment. Kamokura, crying and clinging to Toko-senpai’s legs. But she pushes him away without a second thought. And by her side… would be me.
That’s perfect!
The ultimate revenge!
Could there be a better way to get back at Kamokura—the guy who always acts so cool and bossy?
And as for that “bitch” Karen, I’ll show her that I’ve moved on to a woman several ranks above her!
“That revenge sounds amazing! Please, let me be a part of it!”
And so, Toko-senpai and I formed a joint front to “bring absolute regret to our cheating partners.”
Just you wait, Karen Mitsumoto and Tetsuya Kamokura. You betrayed us, and we’re going to pay you back double!
