“Hmm, should this be about right? Can you see the screen? Is the sound okay?”
I displayed the game screen, put my avatar in one corner, and adjusted the settings.
I needed to balance things so the game wasn’t inaudible or bizarrely loud, otherwise my viewers’ eardrums might end up suffering.
I’d occasionally seen streamers whose games were almost impossible to hear, only for some enormous boom to suddenly blast through and leave everyone commenting things like, “RIP my eardrums.”
“We begin with the tutorial, then. Hmm, movement is WASD, and then there is jumping and so forth. I see. Oh, I simply follow the instructions, then.”
“Even if you say I have good game sense, I rarely played games at all, so I suspect I shall be starting as a beginner in virtually every game.”
“I have hardly ever played them myself. Usually, I simply watch videos and enjoy them that way. With RPGs, I can see the story like that as well. Oh, do I finally get to shoot?”
After finishing what was essentially a tutorial on movement, it seemed the next section was shooting practice.
Click to fire, move the mouse to line up the cursor. Hmm, hmm.
“Hmm, like this? Oh, I hit it. This one, this one, this one, this one, and this one… Hmm? Did the shots land slightly off?”
When I shot several targets, glowing marks appeared where the game registered each bullet hitting.
I’d meant to aim at the center every time, but because I’d fired while moving the cursor, a few shots had landed slightly off-center.
The shots I fired after properly stopping the cursor seemed to hit dead center, so maybe that was simply how the game worked?
Anyway, it looked like I could proceed, so I moved on.
This next area apparently taught me how to use the abilities each character possessed.
Some couldn’t be used unless a gauge had filled, while others required certain conditions to be met, but apparently using those skills effectively could sometimes turn the entire battle around.
“Hmm, is this tiny gun the only thing I can shoot?”
“Ohh, I see, I see. Mm-hmm. I saw them using all sorts of weapons in the videos.”
The whole reason I’d decided to play 『OFA』 in the first place was because I’d checked out what Ephir-san played on her streams.
I remembered her running all over the place, picking up different things, rapidly rearranging her equipment, and generally having a great time throughout the match.
Apparently there wasn’t anything particularly difficult in the tutorial; it was simply designed to teach the basic controls.
I worked my way smoothly through it, and before long I emerged into an oddly huge map.
“Hm? What is this place?”
“Ohh, if I can shoot guns here, then this shall do nicely.”
Following their instructions, I slid down into what looked like a rocky wasteland, where all sorts of guns were arranged on either side.
Why were there shelves with guns neatly propped against them in the middle of a barren rocky wasteland?
Perhaps that was simply how this training ground worked, though it looked like rain would make the place an absolute disaster.
I immediately started comparing the guns and checking what characteristics each one had.
Sometimes I aimed at distant targets, and sometimes I fired continuously while moving the mouse to compensate for the direction the gun’s recoil pulled my aim.
Fire. Got used to it. Next.
Fire. Got used to it. Next.
I quietly tested each one like that, nodding to myself as I went.
I didn’t particularly mind this kind of repetitive work.
There seemed to be subtle differences between them too, so it was nice that they didn’t all behave identically.
Since I was here, I should learn the gun names as well.
Completely oblivious to comments like those flowing by, I hummed to myself and voiced my impressions of the guns while trying each one in turn.
“Hmm, I think the best one is this long gun that shoots far. It seems like it can reach almost anywhere.”
I fired at the targets starting with the farthest ones and found that it could hit almost everything I could see.
It had surprisingly good range, and its damage was higher than the other guns too, so it seemed easy to use.
That was basically why I picked it.
“Hm? But once you look through the scope once, you understand it, do you not?”
Hm? What?
If you could check through the scope once, why would you need to look through it every time before firing?
I didn’t understand, but apparently that wasn’t normal?
…Yeah, judging from the comments, it seemed decidedly abnormal.
If I’d played this game before my magic awakened, I’d at least be able to compare and tell whether my magic had improved my abilities, but this really was my first time, so I had no point of comparison…
“Hmm. I think I more or less understand how to shoot, but I shall need more proficiency before I can manage in actual combat. Most importantly, I do not understand this thing called ‘character control.’ Perhaps I shall spend some time quietly running around and shooting here for practice.”
“Well, I shall practice for a while, and once I can put on something a little more presentable, perhaps I will try this again. In any case, it is getting rather late, so we shall stop here for today. Farewell, my subjects. Make sure you sleep properly.”
I didn’t really understand what had happened, but the stream seemed to have gotten reasonably lively, so I decided to call that a good thing.
And the next day, Yuzu-neesan told me, “You’re going viral because of those clips, you know.”
