Inside the mirror.
Gu Changqing left the Nine States where the humans lived and just kept walking. He didn’t know how much time had passed.
In the distance, dark clouds roiled.
Was it about to rain?
Gu Changqing looked up, but in that moment, a look of horror filled his eyes.
Those were not dark clouds.
It was a large hand that could cover the sun, surrounded with billowing murderous qi, drowning heaven and earth with black mist!
And it was coming for him.
…
After a long time, Gu Changqing slowly came to.
His four limbs were locked down by four divine chains. These four divine chains were like supernatural shackles. It possessed tremendous strength, so it was difficult to break free.
He was in a dark cave and one small ray of sun shone in.
The air was filled with a rotting, moldy smell. In the light, dust particles swirled.
In a dim corner, a man wearing a black robe stood there with his back facing him.
“You’re awake?”
The man’s faint voice resounded. His voice sounded like he had gone through a lot in life and was a deep and heavy tone.
“Why have you locked me up here?”
Gu Changqing asked in a calm and flat voice, as though this wasn’t a secluded, dark and dank jail, but a place he could come and go as he pleased.
“I am the sect leader of the Unorthodox Sect, Bai Chonglou.”
“My people have watched you for a long time.”
The man just said whatever he wanted without answering Gu Changqing’s questions.
He seemed to be waiting for Gu Changqing to respond.
But there was no sound from behind for a long time, as though this man did not care about why this sect would lock him up.
After a short while of waiting, Bai Chonglou couldn’t stand it anymore.
He turned around.
Bai Chonglou had the face of a middle-aged man who was rather handsome, had fair skin, sunken eyes, and a moustache that made him look more rugged.
He continued.
“When you were a child, someone massacred your village and it was hard to survive with your little sister. Later on, you managed to cultivate, but you dug out your immortal root and gave it to your sister.”
“You wandered among humans and became sworn brothers with Jiang Minghuang. Then you entered the Sword Sect to become possibly the greatest sword cultivator of your generation. But for the sake of Jiang Minghuang, you destroyed your invincible sword heart and chopped off one arm.”
“You met with a fox, entered the Forbidden Zone with her, barged into the Reincarnation Sea even. But unfortunately, this fox died tragically. To save her, you pushed the long river of time the other way and changed her reincarnation outcome. You also lost your Great Emperor dao fruit.”
“Then after that, you met Changxi. You shouldered all the blame and burden for her, and even sacrificed your Quasi-Emperor dao fruit in order to protect her.”
The man continued to observe Gu Changqing’s expression after he finished saying all of this.
Only to be surprised to find that even though he had said so much, the younger man didn’t seemed the least bit taken aback.
That really shocked him.
Any normal person would have had some change in emotions if they woke up to find themselves chained up and have someone tell him everything that happened in their past. Even if that person were a Supreme or Quasi- Emperor, they wouldn’t remain so calm.
Even a Great Emperor would looked shocked, at least.
But this man. Despite being nothing more than a mere mortal now.
It seemed like he wasn’t bothered by anything this man had said.
“Aren’t you curious about why I’ve trapped you here?” Bai Chonglou finally couldn’t help but force the conversation along.
But Gu Changqing merely stared back at him.
A moment of silence later, Bai Chonglou said, “You had once called an old Daoist your master. That old Daoist gave you something.”
“He gave you the Heavenly Book!”
“That is a sacred item of my clan. I have brought you here because I hope you will hand it over.”
…
Outside the mirror.
When they heard Bai Chonglou talk about the Heavenly Book, everyone was immediately up in arms.
“I knew it! I knew that Heavenly Book must have come from somewhere powerful.”
“I agree. Back then, I could already see that the old Daoist possessed extraordinary ability. He was able to survive such severe injuries, so he was definitely no simple character.”
“How can it be that something left behind by such a powerful cultivator be completely useless? That’s impossible!”
“Looking at things now, even the sect leader of the Unorthodox Sect was looking for this book too. That means this book must be hiding some incredible secret.”
Everyone’s gaze grew a little hot.
After all, up till now, the Heavenly Emperor had destroyed several possible cultivation opportunities and its systems.
To become a Great Emperor in the future, he would have to start a new system altogether. There was a big possibility that this Heavenly Book became the road that the Heavenly Emperor took to become Great Emperor.
“Then again, why would the sect leader of the Unorthodox Sect know about the village massacre so well? And why does he also seem to know everything about the Heavenly Emperor’s past?”
“Besides, look at the reaction of the Heavenly Emperor. Isn’t he concerned at all about how his family was massacred back then?”
One of the cultivators raised this point.
It was true that even after Bai Chonglou had said all of this, the Heavenly Emperor’s expression hadn’t changed at all.
His gaze didn’t even flicker!
After all, the village massacre from back then was the one thing that the Heavenly Emperor remained obsessed over. He had refused to bow to fate and fought to survive precisely because he wanted to seek justice and avenge his village, no?
The fact that Bai Chonglou knew about this matter so clearly would likely mean that he probably knew who that murderer was.
And in the face of such an important clue, why was the Heavenly Emperor completely unmoved?
Jiang Minghuang shook his head and said quietly, “It’s not that he’s completely unfazed.”
“If even all of you here can sense that Bai Chonglou seems to know a little too much about what happened back then, imagine what the Heavenly Emperor must be thinking about now.”
“It’s just that he’s an overly careful man. After becoming Great Emperor, I spent years by his side. I’ve never seen him give away anything through his expression.”
“Do all of you still remember? Back then he promised that old Daoist that he would not allow anyone else to see the Heavenly Book and would not allow anyone else to know that he has this book.”
“So right now, it’s not that he’s unaffected. He’s just honoring the promise he made back then.”
“If he opens his mouth, regardless of what his follow up question is, it would be an admission to being in possession of the Heavenly Book. He would break his promise.”
Upon listening to what Jiang Minghuang said, everyone was suddenly enlightened.
A promise was really worth a thousand pounds of gold!
That was the first idiom that came to their minds.
But what really shocked everyone was the fact that the Heavenly Emperor was very young back then. And now, after so many years and going through so much.
Despite possibly getting real answers to the biggest question that he had in his heart all his life, he was still able to remain calm and maintain a poker face.
That sort of mental strength really made everyone’s hair stand on end.
