In a room inside a high-rise condominium overlooking the Sumida River, Hayato sat facing his laptop while drinking. Reflected on the display were news articles bearing quite outdated dates.
“The party led by Hayato Sugiyama (16) has completely conquered the Shinjuku Dungeon. This is the first complete conquest of the Shinjuku Dungeon in two years. At 16 years old, it sets a record as the youngest ever.”
“The party led by Hayato Sugiyama (16) has completely conquered the Ikebukuro Dungeon. Achieving this for two consecutive months following last month’s Shinjuku Dungeon, once again, 16 years old sets the record as the youngest.”
“Hayato Sugiyama (16) has passed the A-rank adventurer exam at the youngest age. Passing within a year of registering as an adventurer is the shortest time in the past. Moreover, passing at 16 years old sets the record as the youngest.”
Hayato Sugiyama’s career as an adventurer was staggering. He held various records in Japan’s dungeon conquests, and it was said that they would never be broken in the future.
The record of the aptitude measurement he took when he was 17 years old topped all Japanese adventurers across every category. To this day, no figures surpassing those had ever been recorded.
“I’ve already done everything there is to do,” Hayato had said the day after celebrating his twentieth birthday.
From that point onward, Hayato changed his registered adventurer name to “Hayato” and stopped diving into the deep sections of dungeons.
Dungeon streaming became his main activity, and he took on the standpoint of promoting the dungeon clearing methods devised by the Japan Adventurer’s Association.
The stance of an A-rank adventurer boasting phenomenal achievements introducing “safe and efficient dungeon clearing” as a streamer caught on tremendously, especially among young people.
His style of maintaining practicality and reliability while possessing overpowering strength really struck a chord.
Moreover, against the old generation who voiced objections to the Japan Adventurer’s Association’s methods, the “Hayato Stick” exerted a tremendous effect.
Whenever the name “Hayato” was brought up, the old generation shut up.
This was a phenomenon observable across various social media platforms. Young adventurers were getting their fix of satisfaction using the “Hayato Stick.”
Hayato himself had also felt comfortable with the environment surrounding Japanese adventurers. Until now…
“Tsk…”
Glancing at a bulletin board post concerning adventurers, Hayato clicked his tongue.
That was because posts were treating his participation in the Somalia Dungeon investigation team as a foregone conclusion.
Hayato sank his body into his high-back chair and thrust his right hand out into empty space. Then, he put strength into it all at once. Magic power gathered in his fist, beginning to glow faintly.
There was no light in the eyes of Hayato gazing at it.
Long ago, Hayato had possessed a unique skill. The skill name was [Early Blooming].1 It’s nature was that his growth speed as an adventurer was fast, and while the skill was active, his ability values would jump drastically.
The reason he had achieved brilliant results in every aspect as an adventurer was thanks to [Early Blooming]. Naturally, he had never told anyone about it. It was his own secret alone.
However, on the day Hayato welcomed his twentieth birthday, the skill [Early Blooming] vanished from inside his head.
Hayato currently possessed only average abilities for an A-rank adventurer.
Even so, it should be plenty for operating as an adventurer within domestic Japan. There were also the clearing methods devised by the Japan Adventurer’s Association.
However—
A notification from a communication tool popped up on his laptop’s desktop. It was a DM from Yatsuka Mai, director of the Japan Adventurer’s Association.
After letting out a single breath, Hayato checked the contents.
“I have something I want to consult you about regarding the buzzing Somalia Dungeon investigation team. Can we talk right now?”
He closed his eyes lightly. After exhaling once more, Hayato pressed the call button. It connected immediately.
“Sorry for contacting you out of the blue.”
Yatsuka’s face reflected on the display looked terribly exhausted.
“No. I was just having a drink by myself, so it’s no problem. So, what about the investigation team?”
After hesitating for a fraction of a second, Yatsuka began to speak.
“Actually, I have a favor to ask… I want you to participate, Hayato. In the investigation team.”
Hayato frowned for a split second. Seeing that, Yatsuka panicked.
“I know that Hayato is putting effort into nurturing the next generation. As the Japan Adventurer’s Association, we’re truly grateful for that, too.”
“Then why are you roping me into the Somalia Dungeon?”
“When I submitted the investigation team’s proposal to Japan Business Federation, complaints came up from multiple vice chairmen. Why aren’t you dispatching the best adventurer in Japan? He isn’t at an age to step down from the front lines just yet. That’s what they said.”
“In other words, you mean this is an order directed at A-rank adventurer Hayato?”
Yatsuka lowered her eyebrows.
“It’s really fine if you just participate in the investigation team. I know I’m asking for something unreasonable. I’ll ask other adventurers for PR activities like streaming… Could I ask you to take on something like an advisory role for the other members?”
“Really?”
“Naturally, I have high hopes for the revival of Japan’s strongest adventurer, Hayato Sugiyama. But… I think I understand well enough that something happened to Hayato…”
The two stared at each other in silence. After a while, Hayato opened his mouth.
“Understood. I’ve already mentioned it on stream anyway, so I’ll take it on.”“Thank you!!”
Yatsuka beamed a radiant smile toward Hayato. Wearing a slightly troubled look, Hayato began asking questions about the details of the investigation team.
After continuing their conversation for about thirty minutes, the call ended. For a while, Hayato sat there motionlessly as if stunned.
Then, as if breathing life back into his body, he stood up, entered the bedroom, and opened the closet. A heavy-duty safe was visible inside.
When Hayato entered the passcode, an electronic chime sounded and the safe door swung open. Sitting right there in reverence was a skill orb inscribed with strange patterns.
