“I wonder if you understand scent. That is very, very important. What is produced when the inside of a living creature volatilizes is the individual’s information itself. I think you could even call it that creature’s life itself.”
Something writhed.
Its form was pure and noble. Its beauty was like a work of art woven from moonlight.
“And more than anything, I find his scent pleasant. The scent of a summer night, the scent of thick blood and sadness, the scent like the still air of a mountain. I love every one of those scents, so having them sullied truly makes my guts boil.”
Each time she spoke, the air stagnated and writhed.
In the depths of her pitch-black eyes, the dregs of the world had gathered.
“Ah, no, no, no no no no. Tooyama-kun already has all kinds of women trying to put their scent on him. The woman who tried to monopolize him with a suggestion almost like a curse, the woman who flaunted suicide, her own death, and monopolized his springtime of youth, that carefree child dragon too, and lately even the wielder of justice has started showing a female face sometimes… Scent, scent, scent, come now, they are trying to put it on my Tooyama-kun.”
With a grinding sound, the Dragon of Human Knowledge crushed her silver hair in her fist and kept biting the thumbnail of one hand. Gnaw, gnaw. Blood, dragon blood, dripped down.
An ancient dragon bit her nail while rambling on about her own proclivities. No one could possibly interrupt her there.
It would not have been strange if a tar-like sludge had begun spilling from those black eyes at any moment. While aiming those eyes at the sleeping Tooyama, she did nothing but bite her nail.
“If his scent changes, that means his way of life changes. I will not acknowledge that. If he goes as far as he can go and changes that way of life by his own will, I will rejoice in it. But, you see, I simply cannot bear having his way of life changed by someone else. Do you understand what I am saying?”
That beautiful dragon simply, simply layered her words toward the one she adored.
The Dragon of Human Knowledge spoke of her proclivities, of her feelings.
No wind blew. Beyond the trees of the forest, every patch of darkness in places where light did not reach rustled and writhed, as though obeying the Dragon of Human Knowledge.
Even darkness might have feared that dragon and prostrated itself. Her dark eyes stared at the legendary wind as though licking it.
“…You were always strange, but right now, you make even less sense.”
“Supupu, oh my, how surprising. I thought the you from several hundred years ago was a little more familiar with manners. Did the Hero change you?”
As she smoothed her messy hair, the Dragon of Human Knowledge warped her eyes like a Cheshire cat and played the fool before Wenfilbarna.
“…Could I ask an outsider not to speak of the Hero?”
High in the sky, there was a bang. It was wind, the sound of wind bursting far above.
“Hmm? Oh, are you angry, perhaps? Supupu, you made an unpleasant-looking face, Archer.”
Ignoring even that abnormality, the silver-haired beautiful dragon smiled broadly. Her beauty, one that disturbed the hearts of people and dragged them into a quagmire, sneered.
“…In the first place, what is with that way of speaking, and that first-person pronoun? Haven’t you changed your character far too much? It is disgusting, ordinarily.”
Wenfilbarna’s dignified face sharpened, openly showing her displeasure.
They both fully understood each other’s power. That was why these two living beings, who had lived since the ancient Great War, had still not come to the point of killing each other.
“Supu, ah, please do not mind it. It is not as though I am acting like this because I want you to like me. I am only doing this because I want the person I like to like me. Sorry, but you are not even in my view.”
Silver hair hung over her shoulders. As the Dragon of Human Knowledge toyed with that silver, like dissolved mercury mixed with stars shining in the night, she let out a whistling sigh.
“You want to be liked… I see. Not just the Hoarding Dragon, but you too? Tooyama Naruhito. Just what is he?”
“I do not think I will tell you that. Archer, I will take him home. You smell female, so could you move aside?”
“Kukuku, All-Knowing Dragon, no, Dragon of Human Knowledge. How amusing. You really have changed. You, who once thought of humans as no more than stones by the roadside, now…”
“I have always been a dragon kind to humans.”
Their cheerful expressions did not change.
But dark eyes and silver eyes, those jewel-like eyes, were not smiling in the slightest.
“That was as pets, was it not? You, who discovered magical formulas and spread them to humans, gathered and kept humans the way one keeps dogs, and founded the Academy. During the Great War, you liked humans, but you certainly did not love them. …Now I am suddenly interested in him.”
Wenfilbarna looked down at her feet. Her long lashes and silver-white eyes were directed toward Tooyama Naruhito.
“This is a warning, Wenfilbarna.”
The Dragon of Human Knowledge called her name. Even the sound of air flowing had now completely stopped.
“…………?”
“Try touching even one finger on him. Knowing fully what you are, a being older than dragons, and knowing all of your power, I will kill you.”
Her face had lost all expression. It was the Dragon of Human Knowledge’s face as a living creature, the inorganic face unique to a dragon, a living creature beyond humans.
“………How frightening. No, you are frightening too, but right now, I feel fear toward him. To think a human who could change a dragon this much in the short span of several hundred years would appear.”
Wenfilbarna wiped away the sweat that had unknowingly run down her temple with her index finger.
With a face as if she beheld something deeply disgusting, she looked at Tooyama, who was on the verge of sleep.
“It is the same as how you were changed by the Hero. Even you, who have lived for thousands of years, have become quite human-scented after just a few years of travel, have you not? …Wenfilbarna, this is my final warning. Could you disappear from before my eyes right now? …If you die, you will never be able to remember the Hero again. The life ahead of you will be long too, so cherish your memories.”
Supupupu.
Only the dragon’s laughter echoed.
“………—Phew. Yes, I suppose so. …Kuku, ah, how frustrating. I am still, still not enough, as I thought. I am weak. Being weak really is painful.”
After a great sigh and a moment of rigidity, Wenfilbarna covered her face with her hand and began to laugh.
“You brought up the ‘Hero’ in front of me twice. Normally, I could not forgive that. It truly displeases me when any being besides myself says her name, but because you are strong, I cannot silence you… Kuku, I will take this passion as a lesson.”
The wind itself raged. High above, clouds flowed at an unbelievable speed, shattered, and were stirred into a chaotic mess.
In contrast, the forest was quiet, as though holding its breath.
“Do as you like. Ah, right, Wenfilbarna.”
“What is it, Ai?”
Old acquaintances called each other by name.
The Dragon of Human Knowledge quietly raised one finger straight up and smiled.
“Your wish will never come true, no matter what method you use. I do not know what you saw in Tooyama-kun, but what was lost will never return. Much less—”
The Dragon of Human Knowledge, Ai, closed her eyes for an instant.
As though remembering something, as though feeling nostalgic for something, the expression she showed next was a smile filled with that nostalgia.
“Returning to the beginning of a story that has ended.”
“—”
Wenfilbarna’s face. Her eyes looked as though they might take life by gaze alone.
“…I do not think so.”
Her words were powerless. With that, Wenfilbarna turned her face away from the Dragon of Human Knowledge and looked toward Yuto, who was standing there in a daze.
“I did something wrong to you, Yuto. Well then, be well.”
Short words. The story that certainly existed, the story of a master and disciple’s meeting, nevertheless could not overcome the memories of her springtime of youth.
“Master, you…”
“I did not truly hate you. But today, I was made to realize it. In the end, I could never change. As a result, I was that kind of living creature.”
Wenfilbarna tore her gaze away from Yuto.
With her back turned, she raised her hand and muttered as though spilling the words.
“Think of the time you spent with me as, yes, a bad dream. …Farewell, and have a good life, Yuto Wetral.”
“…I’ll come see you again. I won’t let you be alone.”
Wenfilbarna gave no answer to Yuto’s words.
An especially great wind blew through the forest.
Wenfilbarna’s figure had disappeared.
“…She left. Good grief, that was close, one could say. Long-lived virgins who complicate things despite not knowing love or romance really are troublesome. Now then, now then.”
“Um, hey, could it be, you were being called a dragon and all…”
Yuto timidly asked the Dragon of Human Knowledge.
The Dragon of Human Knowledge placed a hand on her chin and stared at the adventurer with her pitch-black eyes.
“Hmm, Tower-Class Adventurer-kun. For now, you and your companions should return to the Guild. Magical formula, hypothesis construction— theorem proof complete.”
“Huh?”
Pashu.
The Dragon of Human Knowledge snapped her fingers, and with that alone, Yuto Wetral and his three companions vanished.
Her magical formula had surely delivered the three of them to the Guild.
“People like you, who side with Tooyama-kun, are precious. I hope you survive from here on too.”
With satisfaction, the Dragon of Human Knowledge snorted and laughed. She herself seemed to intend it as an action showing the highest degree of respect, but it was naturally arrogant and rude.
“Gu, su, suu, supyo, gogu.”
“Now then, now then. The wind has blown away, and the adventurers have survived. What remains afterward is only the corpse of a monster and you, sleeping like a log.”
In the forest where no one else remained, only that man’s carefree sleeping breaths echoed.
“Guu, shii, pyo, suu.”
Narrowing her eyes at Tooyama Naruhito as he slept carefree, the Dragon of Human Knowledge slowly approached.
“………I am glad. I made it in time. I am glad.”
The Dragon of Human Knowledge collapsed into a sitting position on the spot. Beads of sweat, which she had absolutely not shown until just earlier, ran down her face.
Those words and the reason for her exhaustion were not about the conclusion of the battle between Tooyama Naruhito and the monster.
The Hero Party, the Archer, Wenfilbarna. The fact that she had faced her was, even for the Dragon of Human Knowledge, a paper-thin crisis.
If she had seriously tried to take Tooyama Naruhito away, Ai did not know whether she could have protected him.
“For a monster who has lived thousands of years to set her eyes on Tooyama-kun, what a troublesome woman…”
The life that had raced through the same ancient Great War as herself, and the power of that wind, were painfully understood by the Dragon of Human Knowledge, Ai Kelbrem Doctustail.
For that reason, she was now relieved from the bottom of her heart. So much so that she had never relaxed this much in her long life.
“…Honestly, to think you can sleep well in a place like this. Ah, but if you are Homo sapiens, I suppose it is only natural that you can… Supupu, what a strange face. Heave-ho.”
Unaware of all her hardships, the man slept like a log. Looking at his face, the Dragon of Human Knowledge chuckled.
The Dragon of Human Knowledge folded her knees limply and sat there. She gently lifted Tooyama’s neck and head as he slept on his back, then softly placed them on her own thighs.
It was filled with the delicacy of a mother lifting a baby.
“You smell good… Su, pupu, ufu, hihihi.”
The Dragon of Human Knowledge looked down at Tooyama’s face. As though unable to endure it, she began laughing from her throat.
“Ah, you smell good. You killed so, so many, didn’t you? You trampled so, so many and kept moving forward, didn’t you? Supupu, ah, good…”
A deep breath. Giving Tooyama a lap pillow, the dragon leaned over his body and took a great breath against his chest. On her relaxed and flushed face, there was no longer dignity or compassion.
“I can hear the sound of your heart… Wrapped in the scent of your body, ah, I am sorry. But surely this much of a reward is fine, is it not? I protected you after such a troublesome one set her eyes on you.”
Her appearance was close to that of a mere pervert.
“Gu, suu, supii.”
“You attract only strange things, do you not? Without knowing how I feel. …There are many inside you. Harvey, you are there too, are you not? Hmph, you shameless thing.”
While fully savoring Tooyama’s thick scent, the Dragon of Human Knowledge sensed a familiar presence among those lurking inside Tooyama.
The smell of old-fashioned books was the smell of one who had deviated from the laws of this world, something the Dragon of Human Knowledge also knew well.
“Tooyama-kun, you will surely advance. Without giving up what you want, no matter how painful and dark the storm, you will not stop until you arrive, will you? Good, very good… Ah, your collarbone feels nice.”
Her gaze held heat. From time to time, while her supple body twitched and convulsed, the Dragon of Human Knowledge continued groping Tooyama’s sleeping body.
She was unmistakably a pervert.
The hand that contentedly stroked Tooyama’s body all over, however, suddenly stopped.
“But I am jealous.”
Her voice was cold, with a sticky dampness to it.
“Hey, what was that? I do not know anything about that. Since when could you use the Hoarding Dragon’s flames? …What should I do? Ah, mixed clearly into your scent is the scent of golden flames… Supupu, ah, how irritating.”
She had seen everything. She had watched all of Tooyama’s battles from her own room.
His self-sacrifice, his pleas for his life, and the moment he conquered himself.
She had been excited by his recklessness, aroused by the wretchedness of his begging, and driven to climax by the gallantry of his self-mastery.
This dragon was beyond saving.
“Gu, suu.”
“Ah, but this too is new insight. This passion that is scorching my body, this dragon’s tyrannical instinct that makes me want to take everything from you because I want to know you, and my reason that is trying to suppress it… Ah, it feels good… While smelling your scent, I imagine it… If I were to lose to my instincts as a dragon and try to make you mine by force, what kind of face would you make?”
Rustle.
The forest trees and leaves began to fall soundlessly. Nature had been frightened by the dragon’s dark heart.
As though the trees were trembling, they began to shed green leaves without a sound.
“Supu. Those eyes would pierce me. That mouth would cry out that you would kill me. You would think only of me. Whether killing intent, malice, or hostility, all of you would be poured into me. Ah, this is bad, amazing, so amazing. Just imagining it makes me feel like I will go mad.”
Her breath was hot, hot. Her dark eyes were feverish as they stared blankly at Tooyama.
If the lives of this world could be divided into good and evil, she would undoubtedly be “evil.”
She was an existence capable of imposing her weakness, her wish, and her nature upon others. It was mere chance. It was only by chance that she and Tooyama Naruhito had not yet become beings that would kill each other.
If the Dragon of Human Knowledge ever stood in the way of Tooyama Naruhito’s desires, it would immediately become a fight to the death. Because Tooyama too was “evil,” just like the Dragon of Human Knowledge.
“Gu, guu, suu. Pii.”
How beautiful and horrifying was the sight of a dragon trembling with her nature?
“…Honestly, sleeping so carefree. You really are thick-skinned.”
The Dragon of Human Knowledge chuckled.
The carefree sleeping breaths drained all of her venom at once, and the damp heat leaking from her eyes vanished.
“…I like your eyes, which keep looking far away, toward somewhere that is not here. But I would like you to look at me a little too… Otherwise, I might play a prank on you.”
The dragon spoke to a tiny mortal existence. Her face was so small and ordinary that one would not think she was an ancient being who had lived for hundreds of years.
The warmth one neighbor directs toward another, the Dragon of Human Knowledge simply offered to Tooyama.
“…Just kidding. Supupu. I do not want you to hate me. I will not do such a thing, I will not, I will not. …Ah, the sound of your heart calms me…”
“Maybe I really should exchange this with mine…”
A palm like a white fish, supple yet possessing a feminine softness, groped Tooyama’s chest.
Round and round, round and round. The Dragon of Human Knowledge stroked the center of his chest, precisely where the heart was, with an entranced gaze.
“…All right, let us go home. You did well today. You worked hard. Just like that, remain yourself, as you are, no, advance according to your desires. I will be watching that from close by the whole time.”
“Gaa, ku, suu, pyo.”
“Supupu, what a strange face. …I will put my scent on you. Surely this much is fine, Tooyama-kun.”
Surely, she was not seeking an answer. While continuing to give Tooyama’s head a lap pillow, she held him close and rubbed her own head against him.
She stayed that way for a long time.
Suddenly, the Dragon of Human Knowledge raised her face and murmured.
“…My dragon, huh?”
She had heard everything. And she knew. At the very bottom of Tooyama Naruhito, there was certainly trust in the strength of the golden dragon.
A friend. To Tooyama Naruhito, that role was something very special.
“How nice.”
Supupu. It sounded amused, yet somehow lonely.
—No, that was wrong.
It was the voice of a young child feeling jealous.
~At the summit of an untrodden mountain ridge in the northern Empire~
The wind blew strongly.
Its sound was so noisy that I could not sleep. I had not been able to sleep for so long, so very long.
Since the day the Hero disappeared, I had not slept for several hundred years.
“What should I do?”
Imperial territory, the northernmost region. A realm closest to the sky, where humans of this era had still not reached.
I was at the summit of a certain mountain.
Before I knew it, I had fled here.
As I looked down over a sea of clouds, I felt the cold air on my cheeks.
“What should I do, I wonder?”
I spun words without anyone to speak to.
I had given up, given up, and should have settled everything. That era had ended, and each of us had met our conclusion.
It was a grand finale, a happy ending. We had accomplished the objective of our journey.
And yet, what was I to do?
“Kuku, aha, ahaha. I found it.”
I found that man. It was neither fate nor destiny. There was nothing dramatic. I simply found that power in a matter-of-fact way.
“…Preservation of the soul… In other words, preservation of the world… Ah, I see. ‘Demon King,’ so that was what you were trying to do.”
I traced the memories of those days.
The days we raced through, the days when you all were there. I alone remembered them.
Before I knew it, I had begun thinking about that method.
“The Kingdom’s luck and hero have begun to move… The Tower remains intact, with no one to conquer it. The head of the Angel Church is wise, and every last secret treasure of the Dragon Cult has become the Hero’s armament…”
“And then, that. That power, Tooyama Naruhito… ‘Mist,’ the power of preservation… My interest is endless. Tooyama Naruhito. What are you?”
“Why did you know my name then? The name of my cursed people. The name of a people no one should remember.”
“Relic Blade… That, if only I had that, then the Hero… everyone, that time, again…”
Inside me, something I had once given up on began to catch fire. It was something I must never seek, something I must never wish for.
I alone must not wish for it.
Because that would mean denying that time with everyone, that story.
Happily ever after. We concluded with that. So—
—Wen! Look, look! What an amazing view! I’m truly glad I went on a journey with you!
—So that Wen-neechan won’t get lonely, I’ll—
—Wen, marry me. It’s fine. I’ll die first, but you—
—Wen, just you and I, what is the point of living forever from here on?
—Wen, in a place that is not here, someday, in a time that is not now—
I could hear everyone’s voices. Memories of days when we raced through life as though feverish.
—Someday.
—Someday, we will meet again, Wen.
So many warm words. The Hero Party. Memories with my precious companions, who raced through the Great War with me.
Those, I—
“That is a lie.”
Meeting again was a lie.
Someday, again, was a lie.
That day called someday had never come.
The wind blew strongly, so I could not sleep.
“The time of humans and my time are different. Everyone left me behind.”
“Someday, again. When is that someday? I have waited long enough.”
It was no good. After everyone disappeared, I too did my best alone.
“The thousands of years before I met everyone went by quickly, yet the few hundred years after everyone disappeared have been so very long… Dark, cold, and not fun.”
I took disciples, tried saving the world, and tried getting rid of all kinds of unpleasant things in this world.
But it was no good. At unexpected moments, I understood.
My time has stopped since then. Those days when I raced through life with everyone, with the Hero, had burned themselves into my existence and would not leave.
“If I had remained as my old self, I would have been fine. I understood that I was this kind of living creature, different from humans.”
A dazzling, shining moment, that time when I was with everyone. I passed through it without knowing it was irreplaceable.
“But not anymore. Everyone, the Hero, made me human. They did.”
Happily ever after. The conclusion of the heroic tale of the Hero and her companions surely ended with a happy ending.
The world was saved, time turned, and a new civilization arrived. That should have been enough.
We did what we had to do and accomplished what we had to accomplish. That should have been enough.
Ah, what should I do?
“…I want to see her.”
I thought of that time.
“…I am lonely.”
I thought of that warmth.
“I want to return to that time when everyone, when the Hero, was there.”
“I want to stay there forever.”
That was a ■■ I must never wish for.
Because, is that not so? Something like that is idiotic. The Hero and everyone staked everything for the world, to move the world onward.
What the immortal me should do is love the world that those wonderful people brought about and watch over it.
Yes, yes, yes. That should be something only I can do.
That was what I told myself. Several hundred years had already passed since everyone disappeared. It should have been a short time for me, yet it was far too long.
“…Hero, I want to talk to you again.”
The wind blew strongly. It seemed that just a few years of memories and just a few hundred years of loneliness had broken me.
Nobility, pride, meaning. I could no longer feel value in any of them.
“Ku, kukukukukukukuku.”
Ah, I started laughing. Because, is that not so? After acting so composed. After making myself believe I could live even without everyone.
“I found it. I found it, the way to meet everyone again. The way to meet the Hero again. I found it.”
—Relic Blade.
His power, the power of the Dragon Slayer. That power, similar yet different from the “Soul Devouring” of the Hero and me.
“The power to preserve souls.”
Ah, no, even though it was no good.
It was such a simple thing. I had not accepted parting with everyone. I had only given up because there was no way for us to stay together forever.
“If only I had that power.”
I found the method. The final piece I had unconsciously been searching for.
I thought I could do it.
“…The ‘Kingdom’ is already in the hands of luck and a hero. Now that those two have seized power, that country will become terrible from here on.”
The events in a certain country I had helped on a whim. The horrifying green-haired luck that carried the scent of the “Hero” would surely bare its fangs against the world from now on.
“In that case, what remains is the Empire. Ah, how terrible. It can be done. If even the Empire is thrown into disorder, and even the possibility of extinction is born for the species known as humanity…”
They were gathered. They had gathered.
The conditions, the current of the times, and the reasons.
And also, the method that could realize it.
Byuooooooooou.
The wind blew strongly again.
As though pushing my back.
And then, snap.
Something like a fastening pin breaking rang out inside me.
—Wen, we will meet again, someday. Surely.
“Ku, kuku, that’s right, yes, Hero. Ah, but you see, a day called someday will never come. …Unless one truly wishes for it and moves to make it real.”
I decided. All right, I would do it.
“It really is no good, me. Without everyone, without you, it was boring, Hero.”
My chest was warm.
Ah, a feeling after several hundred years. What was this name again?
“Hero, I will work so that you are born again.”
In other words, from now on, I would destroy this world that everyone had loved and protected to the end.
“And this time, I will make sure I do not lose you. I will preserve you forever, forever, and make sure you never go anywhere again.”
In other words, I would wish for a world where the Hero is born.
“How many should I kill? What should I destroy? You will surely get angry, Hero. Ah, but a world where you try to kill me in anger is better than this world without you.”
My hands were trembling.
Ah, I could do it. I could do that.
“Dragons, Transcendents, and miracles. Everything, everything. I will overcome them. It is all right. We did it then. In that case, this is, yes, not an untrodden story. Kukukuku, ah, that’s right. The story had not ended yet.”
I remembered. This was elation.
“My blood, my origin. Ah, kukuku, that’s right, I have decided. To begin with, there was never any need for me to endure anything.”
The wind, the wind, would not stop.
An age before the Great War. The end of an era when people separate from humans reached out to the stars.
We were born. As existences that governed the functions of this planet. As conceptual bodies of the planet, different again from dragons.
“I have decided. I will do it. Not as Wenfilbarna, Archer of the Hero Party, but as myself. As a function of the ancient star, I will do what I want to do.”
That was right. If there was a method, I no longer needed to endure anything.
I, no, my race, was that kind of living creature.
“Kukuku, ah, I was hopelessly one of the Tusk people. A people who disappeared in the oldest era, seeking the depths of the world and the truth. I am truly glad I did not go with them back then.”
Where should I start first? I would begin efficiently, without anyone noticing.
—Wen, I am a little worried. Our time and your time are different. I am very afraid of leaving you alone. Very afraid of leaving a good person like you alone.
“…!”
The voice repeated.
Perhaps the Hero had realized that I might someday become like this.
—Wen, enjoy the world to your heart’s content. Your—
“Hero…”
Like water spilling over, my limit had already come.
You were such a good person. But you see, I—
“I was not as good a person as you thought I was.”
The trembling in my hands slowly began to settle.
That trembling was surely the last conscience left to me. The final restraint, the final branch point.
If I gave up here, the world would be at peace. What “luck” and “hero” are trying to do would likely be corrected by this world’s immune system.
A dragon, a Transcendent, or perhaps something else would stand in their way.
As long as no one interfered, as long as no great wind blew there.
“What was it again?”
But I would no longer stop. I would not give up. Because the Hero was not in the world the Hero had protected, so it no longer mattered.
“The Hero’s favorite phrase. What were the words she often said when things were difficult, during trials, or in a crisis?”
I would do the same. The way the Hero lived, you always smiled and challenged the world from the bottom of your heart, looking truly happy.
Always, together with those words.
“…ire… to…”
Slowly, I closed my eyes.
“…according… to de…”
I remembered you. Before I could no longer remember.
Your words gave me courage. Courage to smash this world to pieces.
Ah, that was right. When you fought the world, you always said this.
“According to my desires—”
I will take back the Hero.
Because the place I should reach exists only in the past.
“Now then, where should I begin?”
The trembling in my hands had completely vanished, and my restraints were gone.
There was much to do. The world, that Tower, and then Relic Blade and the Dragon Slayer.
“This is getting fun.”
It was the beginning of a fun world. Hero, when I meet you, first, yes. I want to take a nap. I have not slept for several hundred years, after all.
Ping.
“Huh?”
Before I knew it, some kind of arrow had appeared before my eyes.
