The slaughter continued. The wolf demon’s eyes had reddened with bloodlust. Things like family affection or a son meant nothing to it. As long as it obtained the white fox’s inner core, it could advance to the next level. Then it could sire as many pups as it wanted and raise the pack as large as it wished.
The wolf demon’s law was that anyone but itself could be sacrificed. Tigers might not eat their cubs, but wolf demons could!
The wolf demon flung Second Wolf aside and then lunged straight at the red fox. It had discovered that when dealing with the red fox, the white fox inner core inside Du Yi reacted. If it killed the red fox, the white fox inner core might surface due to Du Yi’s emotional upheaval, and then it might obtain the complete inner core.
The wolf demon bit down toward the red fox. At that moment Du Yi, from some unknown reserve of strength, lunged and threw himself in front of the red fox. The wolf demon’s bite clamped onto Du Yi’s neck with a crack. His cervical vertebrae splintered. He was clearly not going to survive.
“M-my husband!”
The red fox looked up at Du Yi. Du Yi’s eyes bulged. Blood foam spilled from his mouth and the vessels in his neck began to spray blood. Du Yi reached out weakly, his hand trembling as he clawed toward the red fox.
“A-Ah Hong, s-sorry, I’m sorry!!”
As he spoke, Du Yi’s eyes poured blood-tinged tears. The red fox stood there dumbly, staring at Du Yi, unable to say a word.
“Ugh!”
As Du Yi spoke he suddenly opened his mouth and spat out a pure white inner core. The wolf demon’s eyes widened. “The inner core, that’s mine!”
With that the wolf demon slapped Du Yi and sent him flying. Du Yi’s head struck the wall and smashed with a boom. His cervical spine collapsed. He twitched twice and fell still.
“Ah!!!”
The red fox instantly went mad, emitting a heart-wrenching scream. Two streams of bloody tears flowed from her eyes. Then she opened her mouth and slurped the white fox inner core into her mouth. The white fox and the red fox were blood-connected, and the inner core was shared. As the inner core entered the red fox, her body suddenly began to swell and her bones started to restructure. The red fox rose to her feet!
“Give me back my inner core!”
The wolf demon was enraged. The inner core within its grasp had been eaten first by that stupid red fox. It went into a frenzy and pounced on the red fox. The red fox, having lost her lover and resolved to fight to death, fought like a mad thing. Fox and wolf battled like lunatics, each unleashing the ferocity of beasts, using claws, jaws, anywhere they could.
What sheer savagery. After ten minutes of fighting, the red fox fell to the disadvantage. Her whole body was stained crimson with blood. Though the wolf demon was also battered, it held the absolute upper hand.
At that moment the red fox, with a huff, spat the inner core out. The core emitted countless white lights, which transformed into fox claws that latched onto the wolf demon’s limbs and held down its head!
“Transform into fox claws! Hmph, do you think you are your mother?”
The wolf demon said this and opened its mouth, spitting out its black inner core. A multitude of wind blades rose up and whooshed, cutting the fox claws one by one. Seeing this, the old temple keeper shouted, “Zhou Bo, go, restrain him!”
After saying this, the old temple keeper and Zhou Bo lunged forward and, using their respective weapons, drove them into and pinned the wolf demon’s two forepaws.
Awoooo…
The wolf demon’s forepaws, pierced and pinned to the ground by the old temple keeper and Zhou Bo, let out a howl of pain. The wind blades in its mouth accelerated. The old temple keeper and Zhou Bo held the wolf’s forepaws tightly, tucking their necks to guard their vitals, letting the wind blades cut their bodies but refusing to let go.
Awoo~
The wolf demon struggled and lifted its head. Fierce wolf eyes radiated a menacing red glow. It looked like it was about to break free, when the old temple keeper and Zhou Bo shouted in unison, “Brother Li!”
At that moment Li Chaosheng, who had been hiding under the window, sprang up fiercely. Gripping the ghost-head blade with both hands, he summoned all his strength and chopped down hard at the wolf demon’s head.
The white blade flashed. A large wave of force burst out. A gush of wolf blood sprayed directly onto the red fox, staining her fur an even brighter, more eerie red.
Huff huff huff…
Watching the wolf demon die, the old temple keeper, Zhou Bo, and Li Chaosheng all collapsed exhausted to the ground, clutching their weapons, their bodies trembling from muscle spasms.
The red fox looked too stunned to do anything else. She wandered toward Du Yi’s battered, bloodied corpse and stood there dumbly, speechless, as if her soul had left her, simply standing there in a daze.
An hour earlier they had sat together eating meat and drinking, talking about life in the city to come. Now only a thoroughly dead corpse remained.
Li Chaosheng and the other two sat on the ground catching their breath. Seeing the scene, they fell into silence. After a long while Li Chaosheng, leaning on the ghost-head blade, approached the red fox and said, “If you want to cry, then cry. Don’t hold it in. As for Du Yi, sigh… perhaps this is also a form of release. If he had lived, how would he have faced you in the future? How would he have endured living?”
After speaking, Li Chaosheng lifted his blade and patrolled around to see if any wolf demons were not yet fully dead, finishing any that were. Two minutes later a heartbreaking, soul-rending wail rang out from inside the house. The cry was so powerful that even Li Chaosheng’s eyes grew slightly wet.
Who says demons lack feeling? If demons can love, they can outshine humans. Today one could see how this red fox, Ah Hong, was a fox spirit that moved heaven and earth with her love.
“Alas~ Fate plays people like a fiddle!”
Li Chaosheng sighed and then looked out into the rainy night. He suddenly saw, not far off, a pair of green eyes staring this way. The gaze was venomous and fierce, full of hatred.
Seeing this, Li Chaosheng said nothing and sped toward that place with the ghost-head blade. The green eyes, seeing Li Chaosheng rushing in, quickly vanished into the night. When he reached the spot, Li Chaosheng found a pool of blood on the ground and understood: it must be the fleeing Big Wolf!
As for Big Wolf, he ran frantically through the rainy night. Without a tail he could not control his body and kept falling, but he dared not stop. He feared Li Chaosheng’s pursuit. His father had already died at Li Chaosheng’s hands. He could not remain on Wolf-Head Mountain. Now he only wanted to flee Wolf-Head Mountain and escape this terrifying place.
But where to go? Big Wolf thought and decided to head to Black Mountain to seek refuge with the Black Mountain Demon King. The Black Mountain Demon King had already reached an agreement with the White Lotus Sect. Once the White Lotus Sect swept the land in the future, he could come with the Black Mountain Demon King and slaughter Li Chaosheng here, flay him and pull out his tendons, avenging today’s hatred and repaying the murder of his father!
“Li Chaosheng, you wait for me, I’ll definitely kill you! Awoooo~”
With a smack, Big Wolf lost his footing and face-planted into the mud. He sprang up and glared around with venomous eyes, thinking, This is all your fault, Li~Chao~sheng!
Big Wolf fled through the night, leaving the borders of Wolf-Head Mountain and running toward Black Mountain territory far away in Xuzhou.
Seeing Big Wolf flee, Li Chaosheng did not pursue it. This deep mountain forest was still under a torrential rain. Li Chaosheng did not know what dangers hid in these woods. If he chased and fell off a cliff or into some other deadly predicament, it would be a needless death. Besides, what could a tailless wolf realistically become?
Li Chaosheng looked up at the sky and thought, “This rain is heavy. I suppose tomorrow will be sunny!”
